As I thought, airlines in Europe are slowly picking off large cities in China. There is a large Citroen factory in Wuhan, which may have swayed AF in favour of WUH. I'm surpised AF went for a 777 though, rather than a smaller A330.

The next cities I guess will probably be Xi'an (XIY), Haerbin (HRB), Shenyang (SHE) and Urumqi (URC), all lacking Europe flights. LH served SHE for a while via ICN, but only 2/3 times a week before cancelling it. Good luck to AF!

Tks for the additional info, SSC. I see the news story has been posted on AF's Twitter page but no schedule details were mentioned.

But a B777-200ER will become spare from the end of March 2012. That plane type currently operates between CDG and BKK but will be replaced by a B747/B777-300ER when AF revises its CDG-BKK schedule for summer next year.

I think it's a smart move for foreign airlines to start serving 2nd and 3rd tier cities in China before the Chinese airlines do so in order to get ahead and grab market share early on.

Cheers

Question: Is this demand coming from China-Europe traffic or is it connecting traffic to Africa and S.America?
China is not nearly as big a trading partner for the EU as it is for the US. I find it interesting that there are more Chinese cities served from Europe while additional frequencies from the US remain unfilled.

This service has been long-rumored. Wuhan is the home of many French multinational factories. To be honest, I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier.

This flight will be mostly CDG-WUH traffic as the demand to WUH is quite large from Paris as a result of myriad business links.

? China's largest trading partner is the EU. However, that could very well change this year if an EU recession materializes.

It won't be just the French corporate clients who will be paying for these. Chinese tourists visiting Europe will also use this service. Plus the connection traffics to other parts of Europe.

3x weekly is just a starter. I hope they can sustain this and their other new Chinese routes. Wuhan is obviously not an island - AF has to compete with CA/MU/CZ/HU/CX who offers multiple daily flight(s) to Wuhan from their hub(s), and onwards to Europe. Obviously these airlines are benefiting a lot from the Chinese economy - they too are adding flights to secondary cities in Europe.

Wuhan is a large manufacturing city not just with French/Europe connections, and I agree I am also surprised that a European carrier did not start this route earlier.

Well played again AF-KL.

It's well known in European airlines HQs; any China flight you launch is FULL in the next weeks.

AF-KL is very strong on the Africa - China market at the moment.

URC is already covered by Europe (if you consider IST part of Europe..). As for Western Europe, I think AMS-URC makes sense as I recall they're developing a flower business in the neighborhood of URC.

It's obviously going to serve some connecting traffic, as well. However, this route will be far more O&D heavy than, say, HGH-AMS or CKG-HEL which depend on the connections. Why? More than ONE THIRD of net French investment in China is in greater Wuhan and more than 50 French companies have their operations there. I think you're underestimating the importance of the CDG link; they didn't choose to start this flight from AMS (where all of their other second-tier Chinese cities are served from) over CDG (where they fly to zero second-tier Chinese cities) for a reason. Simply, if this service were going to be heavily dependent on connections, they would've started it from AMS, like all of their other services to second-tier Chinese cities.

CZ also serves SVO ex-URC, if I'm not mistaken.

On the subject, I wonder though if there will be codeshares for this particular route with CZ or MU since WUH is a focus city for both airlines.

= Now now. Let's not get carried away. If this was the case, all European airlines would be rushing into service in China. This has not been the case - and, airlines in Europe could have done with the $$$ this year.

I don't think that KL will agree. Chengdu wasn't a success at first.
