Question For Those Around LAX

Tue Nov 08, 2011 4:36 am

Typical situation, the radio played a song I haven't heard in more than 20 years, so I searched Google with parts of the lyrics to identify the artist and song title... what I find next, the video is on YouTube.

Looks to me like parts of this video were filmed in the abandoned Surfridge neighborhood to the West of LAX. It's been years since I've driven west of LAX to the Dockweiler beach area, so I can't be certain, but I believe it looked like this. Can anyone can confirm if I am right or wrong?

KLM's N1295E also makes a brief appearance later in the video.

Yep, that's Surfridge. Nice to see LAWA is so concerned about those butterflies that they let a film crew traipse around up there.   Pre-9/11 you used to be able to drive up there on a couple of the roads that connect Pershing Drive to Vista del Mar.

By the way, if anyone wants to read some interesting history and see some old photos on Surfridge, go here: http://www.lakata.org/arch/surfridge/

Maybe when the music video was filmed in 1985 the legislation had not been passed to use the Surfridge area as a nature reserve?

Thanks for the link, excellent information. Sad that people were forced to leave that neighborhood, even if they didn't mind the airplane noise and enjoyed the location.

Started life as a 747-200, converted to -200(SUD) in 1984 according to the remarks for the photo on the left. The view of N1295E takeoff in the video is likely only months after the conversion to SUD, but from the angle it is impossible to tell.

I had no idea that they did that to 747's.........after 20+ years of being an commercial aircraft enthusiast.......this is the first that I have heard of a 742 upper deck conversion program!

Guess you never stop learning

Not many frames were converted in this way. I've only heard of UTA and KLM doing it. But maybe there were other customers, and it's my chance to keep learning.

EDIT: Wait, just remembered JL did it too.

Well that would probably explain it. Seeing how I am not a 1980s R&B connoisseur, I probably should have read the video description.

nutsaboutplanes, you're not the only one, trust me! The video below caused this issue to pop up in the comments and created a mess.

Her full designation was Boeing 747-206BM(SUD)

That is funny, I love youtube arguments.....people get so heated!

I had no idea that this program ever existed and would not have thought that it was structurally possible (then again look at the Dreamlifter).

I really appreciate you taking the time to look up this video, this has been bugging me for a couple of days.....I know it shouldn't but it does.....I feel like an amateur

I lived in El Segundo for a year then Playa Del Rey for a year, drove past this area daily on my way to work. I was told it was supposed to be a neighborhood, but the idea was scrapped when the real estate developers had the wise idea not everyone would have enjoyed living 1,000 feet off of RWY 24/7. Then they opted to eventually turn it into a 'sanctuary' of sorts.

It was a neighborhood. An ex girlfriend's mother grew up in there. Photos of the neighborhood (if you don't believe me) are linked here: http://faculty.ucr.edu/~divola/WEB%2...rs/LAX%20Ext.%20Hi%20Res/index.htm

Wow, nice neighborhood

Well, at the point the photog went in there, most of the houses had been vacant for some time.

Plus it was originally built in the 1920s through to the 60s. I can assure you if there were houses on that site today, they wouldn't look at all like they did in the 1960s.   They'd all be as big as possible, butting right up against one another...a la Manhattan Beach.
