Why So Few Leisure Routes Out Of ABZ

Tue Nov 08, 2011 11:20 pm

If you compare ABZ with NCL for example (NCL has an extra 80k population) why does ABZ have a disgustingly low number of routes to holiday destinations whilst other airports serving a similar number of people have 30 odd routes. EDI and GLA are 140 miles away so I would have thought there would be the demand for these sort of routes. Can anyone shed some light as to why there is virtually nothing?

Cheers

You're being pretty selective with your figures.

Sure Aberdeen has a population of 210,000 and Newcastle city has a population of 292,000. But Tyne and Wear has a population of 1.65 million, so the catchment population is at least eight times as large.

Compare Pittodrie and sportsdirect.com@StJamesPark (!) or the value of the two football teams and you will get a feel for the difference in buying power between a small but wealthy Scottish city and a large but poor English one.

And that is why the leisure markets are so different in size.

Aberdeen also has a much shorter runway than NCL, meaning that up until recently most popular holiday destinations would require a fuel stop, or would need to limit capacity.

Also Aberdeen is quite an affluent area, so those holidaying tend to prefer more exotic locations and are happy to use Air France etc to get there.

FlyGlobespan tried offering low cost flights to popular holiday destinations, however they struggled to fill many of their flights and constantly dropped routes while trying to find some that would work.
