Minot Getting DL Mainline In March

Wed Nov 09, 2011 3:02 am

Minot business is booming. Delta Air Lines will be bringing an Airbus A319 in daily. The Delta schedule will see 1x A319, 2x E70/75's, and 3x CRJ's totaling 6 flts. Delta will begin 7 flts in April.

On the UA side 3 flts daily to DEN. Rummer is that Allegiant will be starting daily service to Las Vegas and 4x weekly service to Phoenix/Mesa. In addition, Continental is running weekly IAH charters. United is in talks to start daily IAH service as well.

Minot enplanements are soaring due to the oil boom. Enplanements are expected to reach 150,000 for the year. To put this into perspective the terminal was designed for less than 80,000 enplanements! In less than two years Minot went from 3 DC9 flights and 1 airline to 12 daily flts and three airlines.

Wow, great news for MOT. Will this make MOT the third busiest airport in the state, skipping ahead of BIS?

Today, a DL 319 tommorrow, an EK 380! I guess MOT is the new IT place to be as we enter 2012. Hey, isn't MOT going to be a haven/oais when the Myan calendar ends 12/21/2012?

Sorry for being flip but, I couldn't help it.

North Dakota is booming, MOT's success is something to be amazed at. It is good that the airport was spared from the summer flood, but unfortunate that the rest of the town by the Souris River is still recovering.

Either way, go MOT, and indeed our fair ND.

I remember working a 440am departure out of there to MSP a few years ago, DC9-30 service.

Well with this upgraded service, there must be stuff to do in ND, no? I'd like to know because it's the only state my dad hasn't been to and we need an excuse to go up there. Maybe now on mainline

Tons of work in the energy industry up there. A lot of wind power and oil exploration is making North Dakota a booming place at the moment. There was just a fairly large oil discovery not that long ago.

Unless you are going for work or something, there still is little reason to go. The isolation is just stunning, even more so than deserts. With a desert it is obvious why it is empty, but, unless it is winter, North Dakota is empty but seemingly for no good reason.

I used to layover in Minot all the time with NW on our 3-5 day "Tour of the Midwest's smallest cities" patterns. Those trips usually had layovers in MOT, DLH, GRB and MSN.....I just dug out an old schedule with flight patterns and there were several of these scheduled as "ADD" patterns on the DC-9-50........lots of great memories.....I will never forget my 3 day layover during Christmas in Duluth!

Hey now... We still have 2x weekly to Vegas and Phoenix on G4 and soon to have 4x weekly to Orlando also on G4. It just so happens that Minot is a lot closer to all the action in the North Dakota job boom. But its not just there. The GF Herald reported this summer that something like 32% of businesses in Grand Forks are hiring right now. I've lived in Grand Forks since 2007 and I've never seen stop and go traffic here until after this past summer! This place is booming! Too bad its so damn flat.

Freezin's the reason.

Like others mentions, between oil and wind ND is the place to be. There was a show called "Boomtown" on Planet Green TV that did a fairly good job of explaining the ups and downs of the oil discoveries there. I was reading new technologies in oil exploration are not only leading to the boom in ND but may reopen fields in Texas, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois. The big challenge is the pipeline network in this country is set up to bring oil from the ports to the interior (pipelines were originally built to get the oil from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast without the U-Boats of WWII off the east coast torpedoing tankers). Now leaders are scrambling to find a way to get the oil from the interior to the population centers.

This is good news. I remember when CO operated DEN-BIS-MOT in the early 90's. A route they kept from the old Frontier. They used the DC9 MD80, and it had good loads all the time.

I bet we will see IAH-MOT in due time.

Largely true. I will add, though, that Theodore Roosevelt National Park has some beautiful landscape, as do several other areas in the western half of the state.

Currently Delta is the only airline offering a first class product into MOT. United is offering a 50 seat product.

Minot is the number one destination for Delta Air Lines out of IAH do not be supprised if they start offering through flights with no change of planes starting March as well. The rumor is the 500a will be a through to IAH.

I certainly questIon this tidbit of information. They don't have any through flights between IAH and MOT (like they do between IAH and DBX via a change of gauge at ATL)

They also don't face the wide variety of competition between IAH and MOT that they do between IAH and Middle East/Africa, so it's far less important. There is only one other airline serving MOT at all, and UA also doesn't have any one-stop through flights to/from IAH (not to mention having considerably less overall capacity to MOT).

I don't know if IAH is the biggest destination from MOT for DL or not, but the absence of through flights is really not very good evidence either way.

Edit: I just realized that the contention is that Minot is the number one destination out IAH, which is almost certainly not true. I misread it to mean the opposite - that Houston is the number one destination from Minot.

I would say most of the people out of IAH are connecting through ATL. Keep in mind that DL also serves HOU.

Ah...'MAGIC MINOT"...many years ago on a CO/FL 737-200 (a FRONTINEAL 737) just after CO took over FL (back when FL was Frontier). Coldest aircraft I ever was on...sat all night in January with no heat... I don't think I stopped shivering until I was inside the terminal in DEN!!

Always good to hear and ND airport getting new service or upgrades. I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see other cities in (specifically western) ND getting more upgrades and more west or south service given the massive boom. Hopefully this will bode well for the eastern cities like FAR and GFK as well.

Go ND, go Sioux!

It is true that MSP, DTW, ATL or any other hub, will have more passengers, but I think what Delta is saying is that IAH to MOT is one of the largest markets for IAH.

Anyhow, I do not think that Delta will overfly a hub to create point-to-point service from Minot to IAH. I however would not be surprised if we see UA/CO start IAH service within the next year.

Probably next on the list. MOT has more infrastructure though and Minot is still a bigger city, and close enough that air service there made more sense. Growth at Williston is gangbusters right now though...freight received in the ISN market is third in the state, barely behind GFK and more than BIS or MOT.

Williston has one thing working against it. The Runway. Departures to the northwest are severely weight restricted due to the uphill slope of the runway, rising terrain, and power lines within 1/4 mile of the end of the runway.

Plans are underway to trench the power lines and that should open up the ability to reliably operate CRJ's.

Minot on the other hand is bursting at the seems. Word on the street is that the airport is asking Delta to rethink its A319 plans because of "ramp congestion." With the late night Allegiant flights which require power outs, there just is not room to RON 2 CRJ's, an E75, and the Airbus.

A buddy of mine told me that at a recent tenant meeting, there was talk of "slot restricting" some portions of the day do to terminal overcrowding. On Allegiant days, it seems that Delta, United, Hess, and Allegiant all have aircraft on the ground at the same time. The hold room has a fire capacity of 196 people and TSA is having to force closer of the checkpoint until boarding begins causing passengers to not make their flight because they were unable to get through security prior to departure.

That has to suck since Minot is such a tiny airport. I would never have dreamed that people would have to arrive over two hours early at a "two gate" airport.

I guess this boom means the secret will get out about how beautiful North Dakota truly is. I've been to most parts of it, and the sense of space and frontier was powerful. So in a way I hate to see this forgotten gem get discovered.

But, all the same, it is great to hear about MOT's resurgence. I'll always regret not visiting the Dakota Territory Air Museum when I passed through Minot (at the time I just flat didn't know it existed).

Even most people who live or lived there - myself included - would not go so far as to call it beautiful.

Desolate, flat, and boring are the most commonly used adjectives I've heard thrown around.

Yes, the western part of the state has some nice areas around the national park...but by and large there is not much to look at other than flat farmland. But yes, there is a sense of space. Especially in the dead of winter when you can drive down a snow-covered gravel road for 40 miles without seeing a house.

Apparently, you all have some insider information and people need to keep to themselves. So, let me dispell the rumors and clarify the truths.
Rumor - United is considering direct flights to Houston. No discussions have been made between airport and United at this time however it would be nice to see that direct route.
Rumor - Allegiant flights. Allegiant is adding another twice-weekly flight to LAS (not Phoenix-Mesa) and this will begin in January on a regular weekly schedule. In fact, MOT has 6 daily MSP on DL, 2 (soon to be 3) daily DEN on UA, and twice-weekly to both LAS and Phoenix-Mesa.
Rumor - the Terminal building can only handle 80K passengers. Well, we've already proven that wrong by handling 121,000 passengers so far this year. We'll be able to handle the 150,000 this year as long as scheduling is flexible. Althought it is sure congested at certain times of the day.
Rumor - slot restricting. Ok, it was brought up as a "joke". Not going to happen! However, there is an issue with a certain time of day where all airlines want to be at MOT at the same time. This will be worked out, there's no other choice.
Truth - people need to arrive early. Due to parking congestion, we'd rather that passengers make sure they are early to find a parking space, get checked in, and have time to enjoy the concessions or wait for their flight. Please arrive 1.5 - 2.0 hours before departure.
Truth - Minot will have "direct" service to IAH but through MSP. Same plane.
Truth - Williston is booming and has its own airport challenges that they are working through. It's possible new or additional air service will start there in time.
Truth - MOT's top 8 destinations in order include: LAS, MSP, DEN, Phoenix-Mesa, Houston, Orlando, Dallas, SLC
Truth - MOT is one of the fastest growing airports in the nation, one of the highest yielding markets, and fastest growing revenue airport in U.S.
BTW - this is the MOT Airport Director

Sorry, again I have to dispute this statement.

While I'm sure there are lot's of folks travelling from Houston to Minot, I just can't imagine that Minot is 'one of the largest markets for IAH'. I suspect there is a bit of overstatement going on here. Largest markets for IAH?, how about Dallas, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Denver and Atlanta? I'm sure Anchorage is larger than Minot (also an oil industry dominated route).

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy Minot is doing well, just don't overstate the size of the market.

With F9 operating routes such as DEN-BZN or DEN-TYS (serving secondary markets that WN isn't likely to touch), I'm surprised they haven't re-tried DEN-MOT and Bismarck, or MKE-MOT.

Nah, MOT is growing on it's own so it doesn't need to throw a wad of cash at Bedford to send a 190 in 3X week. That's the only way F9 seems to be looking at new markets... is if the airport is willing to "make it rain".

Too bad...the Q400 would have been a great plane for these kind of routes. The E190 economics don't lend themselves well to them.

To each his own...

I remember endless miles of fertile green farmland in the east, the Missouri River bluffs, the odd Turtle Mountains in the north, the patchwork lakes rich with bird-life, the rolling plains of butte country in the southwest corner, the badlands, and perhaps the biggest sky a person will ever see.

But, I come from a family with a strong agricultural tradition on one side, so productive farmland probably means a little more to me than it does to most people

And just to inject some aviation in this post, I also distinctly remember the B-52H flightline at Minot AFB - that was an impressive sight.

I think you may be right about the background though...most with no history with agriculture don't see much interest in it, at least in terms of the scenery.

I do see interest in the event of an SEL airplane's engine failure. Nothing like having a state that is essentially one big runway in general.

I wonder if MOT is going to see any necessity for a terminal expansion? Perhaps even some more ramp space?

It's still there

And the Minuteman III's, too

On Allegiant days, it seems that Delta, United, Hess, and Allegiant all have aircraft on the ground at the same time.

What type of aircraft does Hess fly/charter? I can't tell from flightaware...maybe they are blocked...

The boom is obvious just from looking at flightaware page for MOT. Quite the nice variety of business aircraft. Even had a rare Saab 2000 visit on Thursday.

More ramp space would probably suffice. Right now a lot of traffic is funneling through MOT that would otherwise be going ISN if the airport there did not have the previously mentioned problems. North Dakota is rolling in cash right now so it's only a matter of time until improvements are made, at which time traffic will probably rationalize between the two airports.

In the Allegiant investor presentation discussed in another post, it mentioned that Allegiant will be starting Regina Canada service. I wonder if this will take away from the canadian traffic driving down to Minot.

Minot on the other hand is bursting at the seems. Word on the street is that the airport is asking Delta to rethink its A319 plans because of "ramp congestion." With the late night Allegiant flights which require power outs, there just is not room to RON 2 CRJ's, an E75, and the Airbus.

I would think that MOT should be talking to Allegiant, Delta I believe is far more important and a bigger customer to MOT than Allegiant. While Allegiant is important Delta has been in MOT for years (Well NW). I wouldn't try and see if your most important customer would downgrade or change things just so Allegiant can do a power out because they refuse to use tugs.
