OUCH, that couldnt have been pretty. Especially because the pole when with it.

Begs to ask the question however, I know you cant see one but if a marshaller was near by couldnt they have crossed the wands to stop him and have them shut down the number 1 engine to retrieve the flag? Or since it was the captain who dropped it, why not just stop? Then it again, it seems to happen all too fast.

Is it clear that the captain was the one waiving the flag (and steering the a/c at the same time?). Could have been someone standing behind him, no? Seems like if he dropped it, he could have just hit the brakes, shut down the engine, and sent someone in to pick it up off the tarmac. Obviously, if someone had reflexively tried to grab it to keep the engine from ingesting it, we could have had a real tragedy.

Is there an incident report anywhere about this?
