Wed Nov 09, 2011 7:24 pm

It looks like the long planned deal between Iran and Ukraine for joint production of the An-158 is close to materializing:

Oh America and the West are not going to be happy about it... Unfortunately for them doubt that there is much they can do.

That's for sure.

If things were different politically this money would undoubtedly have gone to Boeing or Airbus as part of Iran's much needed fleet renewal.

Let's hope for the passengers sake that this helps improve air safety levels in Iran and helps reduce the levels of anxiety felt by passengers on board...

Not only that, but this might help and push Antonov to build new models and improve its current ones. They are quite lucky that they have such an huge exclusive customer!

International Politics aside...it is good to see a big order for this aircraft...something more interesting in the sky, I miss seeing the BAE-146 in the United Express/Air Wisconsin fleet...

Off topic...but because of the high wing, would this be a good replacement for the BAE-146 into airports like ASE?

Its a shame that Ukraine is taking its production elsewhere... they could be putting Ukrainians to work and yet here they are "jointly producing" An-158s....

Why can't Iran just buy them. Bad idea in my opinion.

However glad to here that the plane is getting attention. Hopefully westerners will order the An 148/158 family (it doesn't hurt to dream :P)

Ditto - but then again - what power does American have over Ukraine?

But on the other hand, the An-158 is getting a much needed boost through this, and joint production was likely the condition for the deal, so not much of a choice for Antonov. The design expertise remains in Ukraine however. I guess this will be similar to the An-140 deal.

I guess the Iranians plan is to use these platforms (An-140 & An158) to develop their expertise and skills in country. No doubt this program will create hundreds if not thousands of jobs for Iranians so it is likely that the joint production aspect was a key part of the deal for them.

I don't see why you say that. Relations between Ukraine and the USA were fine until this happened. I'd even argue they were getting more cozy as mother Russia evolves politically. Americans don't even need a visa to visit Ukraine. This will really ice the relationship with the USA.

The attention is nice - the fact that production will be in Iran means multiple schematics given to the Iranians and I wouldn't be surprised if we a see an Iranian version come out soon.

Sounds like more of a profit for the Iranians than the Ukrainians.

Its clearly evident that Mr. Yanukovich doesn't care as he is inclined to cooperate with the Russians more. For him making America upset isn't a big deal.

How many An-158 they will build in Iran? Any idea about the number?

That's interesting, although in speaking to individual Russian and Ukraine citizens they seem to have mutual disrespect for each other.

Oh you might be surprised! Most of us reallly don't give a hoot about about Iran or any of the political games on either side of that fence. We're all more concerned with staying fed and keeping a roof over our heads.

As for this deal, I am glad to see the An-158 getting some traction regardless of where it sells. As an enthusiast I think it's a beautiful aircraft and I hope it becomes very successful. Congrats Ukraine.

To be honest its not the disrespect - its the feeling of being independent. Russians still believe Ukraine should of been part of Russia but the Ukrainians want to be independent.

The current government is honestly more slanted toward working with Russia which is why the topic of joining NATO and the EU isn't really going on in Ukrainian politics.

Any chance that a formal agreement will be signed before the end of the 2011 Dubai Air show?

That would be quite funny actually, wouldn't it make it one of the biggest deal at the air show?

According with Wikipedia the number of AN-148/158 for Iran is 128. Is it correct?
