Thomson To Start Cancún From EDI!

Thu Nov 10, 2011 2:35 pm

Hello all,

Believe it has not been yet commented in the forums.

Just heard it on the radio, today, that it has been officially announced by the government of the state of Quintana Roo, México, the introduction of a 1 x weekly nonstop schedulded service from Edinburgh to Cancún by Thomson.

This is, again, wonderful news for Cancún and México, as a whole. The Mexican Mayan Riviera is, indeed, picking up as a prime leisure destination from Europe, particularly from the U.K. We have seen the recent addition of BA, which is now flying 3 x weekly from LGW, to the collection of European airlines at CUN, and now Thomson announces further expansion in the market.

Link to a brief press release by BAA:

On a side note, which was already briefly discussed sometime ago in the forums, Virgin Atlantic will be also starting Cancún from LHR in the summer of 2012 !!!...

Keep the good times and nice and cool breeze going, I say...

Best regards

This was announced months ago (May 2011 I believe) with the release of Thomson & First Choice summer 2012 brochures.

They are probably just remarketing / advertising the route on the radio. Although I guess this is for the locals and businesses to know as Nationals won't be able to use the service with it not being a scheduled service, is that correct?

Florida will also feature as a long-haul destination flying with Thomson Airways in 2012.

And operates for a grand total of 3 flights only at height of summer ! Suppose its a taster along with the 3 flights to Orlando to see if the demand has changed.

I am not sure the market can sustain all these carriers. Already we have BA, TCX and TOM on the route and VS will be adding even more seats to the market. The CUN flights are by no means the gold mine they once were. The TOM LGW flight left today with only 70 people on board.

Dumping another 96,000 seats onto the market.

Correct, passengers with Mexican passports require one nights accommodation and a return ticket to enable them to depart the UK. As far as I am aware, you cannot book flights from CUN to the UK seat only with TOM.

There will be flight only from the UK offered (infact are available currently) but this essentially is an outbound bucket and spade package tour flight at the height of summer only. Interestingly the new BA CUN flights are supposedly doing very well.
