Spotter Alert: SriLankan A340 In St. Kitts

Fri Nov 11, 2011 6:35 am

A special SriLankan Airbus A340 to bring home the Commonwealth Games bidding team arrives in St. Kitts (SKB) today. The flight, UL1205 via LHR is likely to arrive in SKB at around 1740 and will likely stay there till the following afternoon. Any chance to get any pics?

Just spotted off the coast of Portugal on its way to LHR right now. Saw the flight and was wondering what on earth a Sri Lankan 340 would be doing where it is!

I'm impressed they could slide an A340 into SKB at all, the runway at Golden Rock never seemed that long to me. CMM 752s seemed to use most of it.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

connies4ever, I guess that's why SriLankan pilots are so reputed and are in such high demand. I heard that they underwent special training to land at SKB.

The runway at SKB is 7598 × 148 ft (2316 × 45 m). That's plenty for landing, but for takeoff a longer runway would be better. Still more than adequate for a lightly-loaded A340. Don't forget, BA fly B772s to SKB on a regular basis, from LGW via ANU. Twice weekly I think - can't be bothered to look up their schedule right now.
Public service announcement: "It's" = "it is". To indicate posession, write "its." Looks wrong, but it's correct grammar

In fact, there is one in the video...approximately at the 2:53 mark in the background is a BA 767 or 777

Semi related, what's with the red nose on this BA 777 landing at St. Kitts?

Perhaps a loner radome from another airline?

A few BA aircraft were painted with a red nose in support of "red nose day", a day in aid of raising money for various charities in Britain.

Well... Not quite as smoky as a DC-8, but still, I had never observed that CFM56 would smoke so much...

Very nice plane, though!

I too was surprised to see it. It is the newest 343 in UL's fleet and joined only in mid this year.

The following video shows some other a/cs at SKB
