Spain's National Team Charter

Sun Nov 13, 2011 3:53 pm

Today Spain's National team arrived to SJO on flight IB2816 coming from LHR. An Airbus A340-600 that brought the team to SJO but inmediately turned around and went back to MAD. My question would be: Is it more costly to bring an A340-600 all the way to SJO and have a ferry flight back to MAD and then bring again in 2 days the same type of plane as a ferry flight to take the National team back to Spain OR just keep the plane parked for 2 days here at SJO?

For me is illogical to have 2 ferry flights for such a long trip than just rather keep the plane parked for 2 days not spending that amount of fuel. Any thoughts?

Well, I am sure IB is not losing money on these charters in any case. The Spanish football association and paying fans and journalists will pay handsomely.
But I guess IB cannot afford to keep the plane on the ground in SJO as it needs it for other operations. Plus parking over such as long period would also have a cost.

A parked a/c isn't making any money for an airline, and in addition, that a/c could be needed for operational reasons. Perhaps the scheduling of the charter flights were done so that they cause the least amount of operational disruptions if an a/c were to go of out service for some reason. I know there are cities that airlines serve less than daily or have frequencies on routes that don't operate on the slower travel days of the week. So instead of having an a/c out of revenue service for your airline for essentially 3 days because it was parked in SJO awaiting the return charter flight, it makes sense to ferry an empty a/c twice seeing as it may be cheaper in the long run revenue-wise.

Very interesting indeed...2 times a 10+ hour ferry flight. Thanks for the thoughts...
