Why Did ANA Not Operate 747 300s?

Mon Nov 14, 2011 4:29 pm

There was an old topic about US airlines operating 747 300s, and the poster made the mistake of saying that ANA operated 747 300s. Now I thinking, why ANA did not operate 747 300s? ANA could have use 743s on the NRT-LAX route, so why they did not order them?

What is the point? The 747-300 had shorter range than the 747-200B while only carrying a handful more passengers. The 747-300 debuted in 1980 with the first flight in 1982, 7 years before the 744 EIS, and only 2 years before the 747-400 went on the design table. The 743 was not a great seller for this very reason.

You also have to remember that ANA couldn't fly internationally until 1986 by which time the 747-400 was available to order (and ANA were an early customer, I think they got their first around 1990) so there wasn't much point buying new -300s.

If anything they might have ordered a few 747-300SR instead. Fortunately, they didn't march down the same path as JAL.

Right on, their first regular int'l flying wasn't til 1986. From 1987, they ordered and acquired a few 742s for those long-range routes and then the 744 arrived in 1990. I have read that some of the first 744s were actually 742 order conversion.

There was little use for a 743 at ANA snce in 1986 they needed the longer range 742's. JFK to NRT with a 743 was a strech, a 742 was the right plane at the time.
