My Little Airport... 3 X 380 Per Day

Wed Nov 16, 2011 5:56 pm

I wasn't sure if was seeing things the other day when I saw a chubby looking EK aircraft climbing out of JNB but this morning there they were.... EK docked at the gate, LH and AF on the opposite side, literally within spitting distance of the main highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

When approaching the airport from Pretoria you drive straight at the 2 380s parked side by side and nose-on to the highway. Quite an impressive sight!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

When I left JNB on 10/1 I thought I was seeing things when I saw the EK A380 parked at the gate -- after checking in and walking down to my "little" CX 747, I saw that part of the terminal area had been cordoned off, there were black curtains everywhere and what sounded like speeches being made ...

When I arrived back in Taipei, I was going to ask about it -- but noticed that someone else had commented that EK had started flying the A380 to JNB on ... 10/1! I'd had the good fortune to see the inaugural. Sadly though, I was unable to get any photos.

So, on any given day, you should be able to see the AF, LH and EK A380s clumped together -- and if AF is having a bad time again, 2x AF A380s!

I noticed them too on Monday.

main highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria

Being pedantic, I'd call the N1 the main highway... The R21 is perhaps the main highway between the East Rand and Pretoria

I tried on Monday, but as I was inside the terminal, I couldn't get all 3 in the same picture.

The EK bird is in the gate just the other side of the Thai aircraft. The road Andz mentioned is behind the two, you can see the streetlights to the right of the LH aircraft.

I would have thought with the introduction of the 380 that EK would reduce the frequency but there are still 3 flights a day, the others being 77W. That's a lot of seats!

Wow! That's definitely a great sight. Is JNB the second most visited airport by A380's after LHR? In terms of airports that do not have an A380 operator as a hub like DXB, SYD, FRA, etc.

JFK see's A380's from

KE
LH
AF
EK

In January, SQ will join that list
I don't think CZ has announced JFK yet, but many think JFK will become an early destination.

But still, an airport like JNB can't expect to have more A380's than JFK or LHR

I caught 3 in a row at JNB on the 27th July 2011 (two months before EK starting sending theirs). One of the Air France ones was delayed 24 hours from the previous day due to technical reasons. All three departed an hour or two after I took this pic :

I stayed at Protea O R Tambo at JNB in September 2010. I had a room facing the apron and had a wonderful view of A380s as well as more 'exotic' airlines we don't see in Europe. This was my best stay at any airport hotel to date.

LH has downsized their JFK operation to two A346s for the winter.

In the summer, it is currently scheduled to see two B744s.

Estimated to arrive 746 minutes (just over 12 hours) late.

When I flew on the LH A380 from FRA to JNB a coupe of months ago the SAA A346 doing the same route was delayed almost as long.

Thanks for the pics guys. Even when I saw the title for this thread I instantly knew how much I would enjoy it. Posts like this is why I visit A.net every day. I did get to see 2 LH388s at MIA due to delay and couldn't snap a pic without crashing my car.

Cheers

They had a problem after one of their A380s returned to Singapore a few days ago (I don't know why). The aircraft ended up coming in to Frankfurt very late, and the JNB route is the only one that has enough slack to try to "catch up" with the schedule.

If you have one aircraft 12 hours behind schedule today, send it to JNB and the planned 9-hour layover will mean it will come back with only 4-5 hours of delay for the next day.

This isn't the best angle (or the best weather today) but it shows how close to the planes you are when driving on the highway!

AF landed about 15 minutes before I took this picture. Click on the picture for a bigger view.

JNB is one of the most perfect places in the world to send A380s... plenty of demand coupled with a very narrow range of commercially acceptable flight timings to both Europe and Asia. I think it will be A380 heaven for many years. Happy spotting!

Impressive. I find it interesting that the A380s are 50% RR powered and 50% EA powered.

I'm curious as JNB has been discussed as a candidate to go 4X day to all four of EK's waves. Look at the EK 'ultimate analysis' (older flight times):
Emirates At DXB - Ultimate Operational Analysis (by HB-IWC Sep 27 2010 in Civil Aviation)

Departures from DXB:
DXBJNB flight 761 at 04:40 (block 8:10) (end of the 2am to 4am departure bank) arrive 10:40am
DXBJNB flight 763 at 10:15am (7am to 11am departure bank for EK) arrives 16:25
DXBJNB flight 765 at 14:40 (2pm to 5pm departure bank for EK) arrive 20:50
None in the 9pm to midnight Departure bank

Arrivals at DXB:
JNBDXB flight 764 at 05:15 (early part of 4am to 7am arrival bank) depart: 19:15
JNBDXB flight 766 at 08:20 (end of 4am to 7am arrival bank... yea... times are rounded) departed 22:20
None in the 11am to 2pm arrival bank for EK (caters to the secondary European departures)
None in the 3pm to 9pm arrival bank for EK (low value arrivals)
JNBDXB flight 762 at 00:10 (Mid to late 10pm to 1am arrival bank) departed 14:10

By the above numbers, a departure in EK's 9pm to midnight bank would arrive 3am to 6am. Quite possible

For arrivals, The 11am to 2pm bank would depart at 5am to 8am. Also possible
For the 3pm to 9pm arrival bank, it would be a 9am to 3pm departure. Also possible.

So while it is impressive JNB sees multiple A380s, I am wondering when EK will serve the airport with a 4th daily.

With a new flight landing in JNB at 5am to 6am and departing JNB 7am to 8am (quick turn).

Quoting flyingalex (Reply 17):
and the JNB route is the only one that has enough slack to try to "catch up" with the schedule.

I'm curious how other airlines are operating their A380s to handle 'slack.' AF and KE simply do not have large enough fleets to have much slack available.

That's really close. It seems that one could almost touch the LH aircraft by stretching his/her hand.

You are far from much of the rest of the world, I'd say A380 are expected in places like that.

There is a service road between the highway and the airport that makes them seem even closer....

The red blotch is where I took the above photo from, and the red line is the centreline on the service road which is public access.... the 340 is where the LH 380 was parked.
