Inaugural IAH-LOS Service With CO/UA Tonight

Wed Nov 16, 2011 11:00 pm

I'm looking at tonights flight and I can say I know the Nigerian population in Houston is huge, but the Non-Rev list is RIDICULOUS tonight, lol

I think this flight has the potential to be one the most lucrative out of IAH for us going foward. Especially once the 787 come online.

Right now I believe we have the lie-flats on the T7's for this.

I wish a safe and good flight for tonights customers, crew, and non-revs.

Wonder why the non-rev list is so high? Best of luck to UA/Co for this new route! Should be a mega moneymaker!

LOTS of Nigerians in Houston. Something I learned when I moved here.

I don't know where the largest population is in the US, but I'm going to say Houston has to be up there.

Isn't it being operated with a pre-merger Continental 777 that has had lie-flats for a few years already?

Yes. We were hoping to have the 787 on this from the start.

But do those Nigerians work for Continental? If not, it wouldnt explain why the nonrev list is high.

Even then, the Nigerian population is large but only by African community standards. Its still only about 20,000-25,000. By comparrison, there are about 100,000 Vietnamese, 75,000 Chinese, and 35,000 Filipinos in Houston. As of 2007, this was the foreign born African population in the US:

Born in Africa, 2007
New York 214,341
Washington DC 185,255
Boston 85,662
Los Angeles 72,620
Atlanta 64,870
Dallas 50,105
Houston 47,746
Chicago 46,189
Philadelphia 44,171
San Francisco 39,294
Miami 18,787

Nigerian VFR traffic is certainly welcomed, but clearly NOT the reason why CO launched this route at long last.

Buddy pass selling has historically been a huge problem on US-Africa routes. DL has specifically excluded its Africa network from its Buddy Pass program due to past abuse.

Alot do. Most I talk to say they cut off 5-6 hours ( that may be low ) off their trip without having to connect in Europe.

Without a doubt. This service, hopefully should help the many oil and energy companies here in Houston with their travel time to Lagos.

This might be the direct, but DL 55 is from LOS-ATL-IAH that leaves around 2230L and gets into IAH around 0845L.

that is a lot, but GUM-HNL runs those number all the time. I seen have 100+ there!

I will note some satisfaction that even with CAI not working out, CO will serve 6 continents by the time the merger is finished.

True story....

coming out of HNL one time with friends and family. Checked the loads the night before, and showed like 25-30 seats open. Noooooo Problem.

Get to the gate the next night......wait...wait..they close the door and no kidding...like 70 something non-revs out of GUM bumped us and had to go through LAX,lol

So Houston has permission from us to have all the Nigerians

I know the seat maps don't mean anything, but it looks like the load tonight and the load for tomorrow are empty. It looks like most of tonight's BF cabin is upgrades and there are only four people booked in it tomorrow. Does anyone actually have any insight as to how bookings have been?

Although I highly doubt it will happen, the 10h ground time at LOS is more than enough to add a LOS-LAD tag, and we know from the SonAir/Atlas IAH-LAD Houston Express flights that there is a great deal of traffic between the two cities.

Looks like it has started off a bit slow with the first flight.

I notice in December it looks as if it picked a little early in the month.

The Chronicle had an article about it today or yesterday ( wednesday ) in the business section.

I would have to imagine sales has actively been promoting it to the energy community here around town.

Do we think going forward that if this route "takes off" which I am sure it will that they may change to a three class T7 with F? Seems like one of those routes with lots of $$$ that could warrant it.

This route is brand new. It is too early to talk about a 3 class ship. Maybe but maybe not. I am sure some tried and true markets will be higher priority.

I imagine DL's ATL flight will be effected by this.

Even though CO is now really UA, it's nice to see CO finally add an African destination. It is long overdue for them to join this club.

IT has to stay a long time in Lagos because its an all night flight back to Houston. Who wants to arrive in Houston at 2:00AM. Haven't checked the schedules but Continental's India and Tel Aviv flights have long stays too as does Newark to Hong Kong.

Is arriving at 5:25 AM much better?

Why couldn't it do:

1705-1140 IAH-LOS

1340-1925 LOS-IAH

And then the downtime is in IAH and then it could do some domestic runs or even Hawaii or Colombia or something rather than bake in the Nigerian sun?

You don't lose an entire day traveling and there are far more available connections.

It's worth it if they can justify the additional revenue generated. You can get a full day of work in Lagos, hop on the night flight and be in Houston by morning. Plus, there are plenty of connections to be made between 630-730AM vs 2030-2230.

Look at deep South American routes (slightly different, yes, but similar concept). You could operate a daylight return, but business travelers want the night flight, and since money talks, most flights are overnight flights.

Yes -- and for that matter there are several other cities -- including NYC -- that have large Nigerian populations.

But there was a reason why Ghana Airways came to BWI for so many years, and it is not an odd, random accident that UA990 to ACC was scheduled to departs IAD.

Initial flights are no measure of future success. Routes are long term investments. I flew CO on IAH-BOG during the first couple weeks it started. There were 7 pax going down, and about 30 coming back to IAH. The route is still around for sure.

Exactly right. 5:30 is much better than 2 a.m. One gets through customs in a reasonable time and make many flights leaving during the 8 am hour with minimal waiting time. This is perfect for a connection window, and customs won't be busy at this time. A 2 am arrival is terrible since one may have to wait 5 hours or more for a connection. A 7:30 pm arrival is terrible for connections out of IAH. I recall there has always been a huge bank of flights leaving IAH at 8:30-9:00. This is not adequate time to clear customs and run to the gate.

So is it safe to say that CO is using two GE powered 777's on this flight? If so, where did they come from? I'm pretty sure one came from the not-started CAI flight. But judging on times, there has to be two 777's flying this route.

The flight is wide open tonight . There is a total of 196 seats open with 1 person listed as positive space and 16 non revenue passengers listed . This is probably why there are a number of no revs listed . They are taking advantage before the flight starts selling out .

So for tonight's inaugural flight back to IAH from LOS, and how many are booked on that one. I wonder when the crew arrived to fly that flight, and how they flew to LOS. Also, I bet the 777 arrives so early in IAH that it enters the rotation to flew to NRT. Or it could be the early afternoon IAH-EWR flight which is a 777.

I would really like to go, but looked at the Visa process and said screw it. Also you have to get shots. I would just go and come back as I heard enough to not want to leave the airport. Their Visa Process is too much for me to bother with. Sad.
Worked Hard. Flew Right. Farewell, Continental. Thanks for the memories.

And the inaugural is about 2.5 hour late returning from LOS..

Here's something interesting...
Go to the "check flight status" on CO's website. Enter the numbers for, and check the flight either to or from Lagos, Nigeria. Then look at the map that shows the aircraft's live progress.

Look at the map and it says, "Los Lagos." Gee, is Nigeria a Spanish speaking country? I don't think so...(I am not being serious about that---) But LOS Lagos?? I have never heard that before..
