Future Of Airside 4 At MCO

Sat Nov 19, 2011 7:18 pm

Now that FL has moved out of its previous gates at Airside 4 and back to Airside 2 in anticipation of the consummation of the merger with WN, what is going to happen to their 8 gates at 4? I tried a search using several combinations of keywords but came up with nothing, so my apologies if this has been discussed previously.

Cheers,

Well FL is still going to use a couple of Airside 4 gates for international arrivals, which cannot be handled in 2. Beyond that, I don't really know what is going to happen. There are gates on Airside 1 that have the same issue as well.

It's actually only a single MBJ flight currently and for the foreseeable future.

MCO has a lot of empty gates at all times. Whenever I go to the airport, it looks diserted as far as gate usage. I doubt that those gates will get much use, at least for now.

Delta could expand again and re-open the MCO hub  .... just kidding.

I would think there might be some interest from the Airside 1 airlines with international operations to move to Airside 4, as Airside 4 is setup to allow international arriving passengers to exit without having to re-clear security, unlike Airside 1. Although, I seem to recall that Airside 1 was due to the same changes as Airside 4 to allow this to happen. Not sure if that ended up happening or not.

I was at MCO yesterday for 1st time in over a year. Did US move from 3 to 2 or 4, because I saw many US aircraft on the east side. Also, didnt see a whole lot of ops on 36L Since 36R is closed, I found that surprising.

I will get to the answer to that below after I answer the next few.

FL only has a MBJ flight that comes in around 4:30, they offload then tow it to AS 2 by 5pm usually.

Its been a while I guess since you been there. Several airlines actually moved to AS 1 in the last 3 years. Copa moved there in 2009, Aeromexico and Jet Blue moved there in the past year.

Airside 1 also has the International mode system on its trains like Airside 4 does where pax now come up an escalator from customs and go right on the train. This started in July

US Airways is still in Airside 3 at the 50s gates. A lot of aircraft departing to the east coast cities - such as CLT and PHL for US, often depart on 17L/35R.

As for what is going to happen to the 90s wing.

For the short term - we're talking possibly by next Saturday. There is a gate shortage on Saturday afternoons with 5 VIR flights again as well as AFR, TAM and DLH coming in during peak hours too. There was an issue last week where a VIR plane did a ramp hold waiting for its own gate (81) as it arrived early and no gates were available. The plan is to tow VIR 75 off of Gate 81 and put it at I believe Gate 91 to load, so the next VIR flight can use Gate 81. Don't be surprised if you see a VIR A330 parking at Gate 91 next week.

The long term plan is to actually make at least 2 of the gates international capable in the next year or so and capable of actually handling an A380. They will have to remove the other gates in the process and just leave anywhere from 2-4 capable of handling widebodies.

This is a much more difficult project than you think though. For those of you that been in AS 4 customs - the immigration booths face the hall coming from the 80s gates. The 90s gates are in the direction of the baggage claims and the actual offices of CBP.

I'm not sure if there is an actual plan to redesign customs facility or just to somehow make a corridor that goes from the 90s gates over to the 80s gates somehow so pax come down those halls.

I don't think any project has been approved yet however. I'm sure they will be talking to consultants shortly about it.

Delta also might use the 90s gates for RONs instead of the 80s gates, especially during the snowstorm situations in the northeast.

The third wing of Airside 2 has yet to be built. Any possibility there may be FIS there if and when it gets constructed?

BTW, why is 36R/18L closed at MCO? I know it's been closed for a while, but did not see anyone working on it. Does anyone know?

Repaving. There might have been some additional light and navigational work but I don't know...

No it wouldn't make sense at the moment to have FIS in 3 different buildings. If anything Southwest/Air Tran would occupy the 3rd wing, they use the current location for RONs at night

Taxiway work leading up to the runway.

Speaking of which, has that ILS interference issue ever been resolved for the potential construction of the third wing at Airside 2?

There are 2 projects happening simultaneously:
1) Runway slabs and slab joint material replacement
2) Rehailitation and fillets for Taxiway E and J at the Runway.

You may not see it from Bear Rd. but plenty of work happening. The runway is due to re-open in Jan 2012.

There is not an ILS issue it is the penetration of the runway approach surfaces (Imaginary Surfaces) by the third wing when it is built. This will be resolved by lengthening runway 17R/35L to the north by 1,000'. The third pier and the runway lengthening should occur at the same time.
You can't beat the Experience.

You can see it from the 11th floor though. Most of the construction work now is on the center to south end of 18L/36R

As for 90s Gates now

Gates 91, 93 and 95 have been pulled against the building so those areas can be used for hardstands ie if Delta uses up everything in case there is a snow storm up north.

Gate 97 can be used for a 777

Gate 94 for an A330.

There is a very good chance you will see the VIR A330 at Gate 94 Saturday.

Due to lack of gate space between 5-7pm, VIR has planned to unload VIR 75 at Gate 81, but move its outbound 76 to Gate 94 to load pax (sched to leave 6:10p) to make room for VIR 73 that is sched to arrive at 5:35p. Of course if VIR 73 runs late, then 76 will most likely load at 81.
