Hi there!

It depends what city in Australia you are going to.
If you are coming to Perth I reccomend either Singapore Airline, Malaysia Airlines or Cathay Pacific.

Singapore Fly to Perth 3 times daily with widebodied aircraft (777-200 and A340). All their flights to Perth are PTV equipped.

Malaysia have 2 flights daily to Perth using A330-300 and 777-200 aircraft. again, all of which are PTV equipped.

Cathay Pacific fly to Perth 3 times weekly with a A330 which also has PTV's.

I reccomend these airlines over Qantas on the long flight from The UK because if you are travelling econonmy class on long haul flights it is allmost torture without the PTV's.

If there is anything else I can help you with ask!

You have plenty of options.
MAS via Kaula Lumpur.
SIN via Singapore of course.
Having the PTV aboard would be a deinfite bonus, QANTAS and British Airways are looking at putting installing them in future.
Cathay Pacific.
Royal Brunei are offering really cheap flights at the moment.
For something different you could fly Air New Zealand via USA. and New Zealand.

Why fly non stop when you can connect

For your information British Airways 744's are currently in the process of being PTV equipped. A handfull of them currently have them.

Qantas, on the other hand are taking delivery of a leased BA744 in around November the cover the installation of PTV's in its 744 fleet.

I guess it would depend on your departure and destination cities. If one of these are considered a "secondary" city, the airlines with the best service may not operate there and thus increasing your travel costs.
1) Service
CX, SQ - fabulous service with PTVs.
NZ, UA, QF, TG and BA - no PTVs, average service.
2) Stopover
Singapore, Hong Kong and Kualar Lumpur have great airports. But only Changi has the CBD close at hand for a quick break. Kowloon or KL are pretty far from their airports. Bangkok and LAX are certainly not that hot.
3) Network
Ansett/Air New Zealand and Qantas have the widest networks in Oceania. If you're flying to say, Alice Springs, go by one of them. If you're departing from somewhere like Munich or Salt Lake City, United/Ansett or Lufthansa/Ansett would be the way to go...

Seriously, SQ is not the biggest international operator in Australia (after QF and NZ) for no reason. It carries a huge number of Australia-bound pax and that is very telling evidence.

If your going from the West Coast and flying coach, go with Qantas!

As I fly business all the time I find Uniteds business between YssY and Lax to be better than Qantas.

Both airlines offer a fantastic service on that route. But I would lean towards QF if your flying coach.

AZ is ok but not as good as the others.

I would recommend either SIA or MAS.
Great service
2 x daily LON KUL
2 x daily KUL SYD
daily KUL BNE
2 x daily KUL PER
also I think they have the cheapest price among major airlines (not including airlines like BI and VN... they would probably cheaper)
KLIA is just GREAT!! I've been there twice and I LOVED IT!!

Great service
3 x daily LON SIN
3 x daily SIN SYD/PER
2 x daily SIN MEL
daily SIN BNE
Changi is also very good, especially if you want to go to the city and take a stopover break...

Or you can find out about the VS/AN LON-HKG-SYD fare... two excellent airlines!

If you are flying Economy and it is a fairly long flight, probably SIA, or CX, are the way to go especially if it is a long flight. If you are flying Buisness then I would say Qantas, their buisness class is very very good, and it is no worse than sia or cx's I dont think, if not it is better.

As previously stated, there are thousands of options coming from the UK/Europe.

For cheaper fares try:

Vietnam Airlines (Qantas codeshare from Ho Chi Minh)
Equ: B767-300ER

Egyptair (via Cairo and Singapore Changi)
Equ: A340-200, B777-200

KLM (very cheap now; via Amsterdam)
Equ: B747-400

Garuda (ok,cheap. via Denpasar, Bangkok and Frankfurt)
Equ: A330-300, B747-400

For Intermediate fares try:

Lauda (excellent airline; via Kuala Lumpur and Vienna)
Equ: B777-200

Olympic (good airline, via Bangkok and Athens)
Equ: A340-300

Japan Airlines (excellent service, via Tokyo Narita Intl)
Equ: B747-200/300, MD11, B747-400

Ansett/All Nippon Airways (good, star alliance, via Osaka)
Equ: B747-400

Gulf Air (ok servicesafety, via Singapore and Bharain)
Equ: A340-300

For Top range airlines try:

Malaysia (superb service, via Kuala Lumpur)
Equ: B747-400, B777-200

Qantas/BA (excellent atmosphere, via Singapore)
Equ: B747-400

Cathay Pacific (outstanding, via Hong Kong)
Equ: B747-400, A340-300

Singapore Airlines (one of the best, via Singapore)
Equ: B747-400

Emirates ( best in the world, via Singapore and Dubai)
Equ: B777-200/300

Air New Zealand (long trip, via Auckland and LAX)
Equ: B747-400, B767-300ER

Thai (warm, friendly, via Bangkok)
Equ: B747-400, B777-200/300

I hope this helps you greatly. These are a list of the best airlines servicing Australia from abroad. But beware, many of these flights terminate at Sydney and will require a connection to other captial cities, usually included in ticket price. There are many Australian domestic airlines servicing main cities. They all provide seamless connections with partner airline or through agreements. These airlines are:

Qantas: B767-200/300, B737-300/400, Bae146-100/200 and Dash 8-400.

Ansett: B767-200/300, B737-300, Bae146-200/300, A320-211

Impulse: B717-200, Beech 1900D

Virgin Blue: B737-400

I hope this helps!!

If you want my recommendation then for a short journey with good entertainment choose Qantas, Singapore, Emirates, Malaysia or Cathay.

If you want some adventure and ethnic flavour, try Egyptair, Gulf Air, Garuda or Olympic.

Dont be afraid to choose the Asian airlines. They all provide excellent standards and service in order to compete with each other.

Personally I am always most comfortable on Japan Airlines. They offer perfect service every time.

Hope this helps,

PS. I am flying to London with Egyptair in December,
I will post how they were after my arrival. I cant wait!!

I think CX are by far and away the best, space, supurb food and wonderful service but you tend to pay for the quality. The service is more like Business in an economy seat.

SQ are alright, but the service and food have slipped big time from the glory Singapore Days. I'd fly them but wouldn't look to fly them.

NH/AN I flew a few months back and was very happy with, ANA had good food, space and service while Ansett service was good, but space and food a little mean.

BA has bad space and service is unpredictable, it can be very good, but I've had more than a fair share of horror experiences on BA on the route. Food can be awful, in the past I've refused to eat it. Once in First Class (not my usual place!) the service was so bad, the then chief BA 747 Pilot who was also aboard went round and apologised to everyone.

QF space is OK but not great, food edible, service passable. Of the last 7 people I know to have flown QF on the route, 5 have vowed never to fly them again, I wouldn't go that far, but would try to avoid.

Generally, the more wiz bang gizmos, like PTV's, Inseat Phones etc etc, the worse the other aspects of the service, which in order to pay for the gizmos go out the window. It's a long way, a good airline makes a big difference.
