Unmarked Tu-154 At Dulles Today

Tue Nov 22, 2011 12:28 am

Hello,
Today as i was walking home from my classes, i saw what appeared to be a tupolev 154 landing at Dulles International in Virginia. I could tell it was a tu-154 by the landing gear, and the engine layout on the back. Does anyone have any information?
Thanks, rjm777ual

If you have a timeframe, take a look on FlightAware.

I'm pretty certain that FlightAware doesn't recognize Tupolev, Ilyushin, Yak, etc......

Flightaware recognises the Cubana flight from Paris Orly on an Ilyushin- Il96. I've seen it many times when tracking flight-paths over Bermuda.

Indeed they do! I've seen AN-12's come/go from south Florida, AN-124's fly around the globe, and IL-76's drop into the USA on occasion - all on flightaware. Also, the IL-96 from Cuba to Canada is often on there.

I've never been able to find one though, even when doing searches out of major Russian airports...maybe I'm just not looking hard enough!

Flightaware does recognize Soviet era aircraft but often doesn't recognize unfamiliar ICAO identifiers. Had to do a go around at BOS last monday night while approaching 27 because an IL-76 landing on 22L before us taxied onto 27 when clearing, then stopped on the runway. Had a TTF flight number. When I went to look it up on flightaware, there was no sign of it's arrival. It departed the next morning and didn't come up on flightaware either.

I know several governments fly Tupolevs. Any any of these look familiar?

Probably not the Polish one as the Polish gov't has disbanded the VIP squadron and put up for sale their remaining TU-154.

And, unfortunately, the photo kgaiflyer chose was of the very aircraft that crashed in April 2010 taking the life of the Polish President Lech Kaczynski. So it was most definitely NOT that aircraft.
None shall pass!!!!

So noted, richierich.

Any additional insight into which government might have flown the aircraft into Dulles ?

TTF is Russian Air Force 224 Flight Unit ("Two Two Four" = TTF), so like most air forces* it is unlikely to appear on Flightaware (for example, the same would be true of flights using the RAF's RRR flight number)

*There are exceptions though, many BAF flights do appear.
