Delta B767-300ERs At Haeco Maintenance At HKG.

Wed Nov 23, 2011 4:05 pm

I saw a Delta B767-300ER inside the hanger and another one outside two days ago. Is this where the upgraded interiors with lie-flat seats in Business are being installed and is this the only facility doing this or are they using other locations? Also does anyone have a list of which aircraft have been upgraded so far and which two are at HKG now?

Yes, this is where the 763ER seat/overhead bin mods are being done.

When Delta sends the B763s there, do they typically fly empty, do an equipment swap with whatever normally does HKG, work it to HKG via the NRT hub, or do they add a one-time flight such as SEA/LAX/MSP/DTW - HKG to try to get some revenue out of something that would be otherwise empty. Flying a B767 empty to Asia has got to be expensive. I remember last year somebody pointed out a one-time DL B757 flight NRT SEA for this exact purpose.

Historically, most repositioning flights have gone ATL-ANC-HKG. Lately with the increase in 767-300 Asia flying, more of the repositioning has been done via empty NRT-HKG or other local flights. They are always extra legs and not subs for the scheduled flights.

Why the interest in N177DZ? I flew on N173DZ on Nov 22nd from HKG to NRT and it's last flight prior to that was from SFO to NRT on Oct 20th. It did have winglets on it, which a previous photo taken in September I saw of it did not have them, so I assume they were installed during that down time. Would they have been installed by HAECO at HKG?

Well because it was the first plane in which I was kindly allowed to ask questions in the cockpit and stuff like that. Plus its not that old so I want to know whether or not its going to be modified.

Does DL have extra flight numbers to assign ex-NRT? I would think if it was a revenue flight, the flight number would have to originate in the United States, even with a change-of-gauge.

As of the last board meeting about the 763ER upgrades, all will get the mod so 1703 will get the upgrade at some point between now and the 2013 target deadline for fleet completion.

Any updates on the 744 mods? I will be flying DTW to NRT in February and hoped to be on a modded one.

Eventually

The two 763ERs in for the mods right now are ship 1607 (N1607B) and 1610 (N1610D). These two are the last of the seven 76Ts that were scheduled for the flat-bed mods this year.

The first one, ship 6310 (N670US) is still in (has been in PEK for the mods since September). I wouldn't get my hopes up, by February, I would think that there would be at most two 744s flying around with the mods completed...

It is not uncommon to ferry an empty plane overseas for major service. I'm sure the fleet planners have sorted it out to have it doing a revenue leg to NRT from the West Coast and then ferrying on to HKG, but it would not surprise me if some are sent totally empty ex-USA for that. Maybe they carry some cargo but I don't know.

Remember, DL has ferried its 777-200LR's, which are critical to their expansion to Australia, to the UK for pesticide fumigation required by the Australian authorities. Why this had to be done all the way over in the UK, I don't know. To my knowledge, these were completely empty ferries, and the cost of those operations is simply calculated as a cost of operating that LAX-SYD route.

Ferries are generally cheaper to operate than revenue flights. No catering or cabin service costs, no need to schedule F/As to work, and the lower payload = lower fuel burn.

Anyone know if N173DN is going to be returned to service as planned? She was painted after desert storage but then returned to KVCV.
