Alitalia To Launch New Destinations In 2012

Fri Nov 25, 2011 11:36 am

According to an internal memo/newsletter sent yesterday to the employees Alitalia announces they will expand further in the next few years.
Just in 2012 AZ will start :
- 3 new long-haul destinations with an overall increase of frequencies (when compared to S11) on existing routes
- 6 (to become 15(**) within 2014) new short/medium-haul international destinations out of FCO.

The smart carrier AirOne will launch 35 new routes within 2014 (16 in 2012) with 3 new bases (1 of them should be Venice).

(**) 13 of them from FCO

I suspect VCE, BLQ, LIN (replacing AZ express). All have good mix of corporate/leisure traffic.
I can't see them going for PSA, FLR,NAP as they more leisure-focused markets.

May we see some more routes from other airports than FCO, LIN and MXP to Sky Team hubs?

Do AZ receive that much new aircrafts that they can actually start so many new routes?

Mostly LIN-MAN. Tried 4 times - 1948, 1968-1972 (latterly extended to DUB), 1988-1992ish (extended to DUB 1990 or 1991), then in mid 2000s. With LS operating daily and FR start ops to Rome, it might not be a prudent move.

What is really interesting is that AZ is not expanding T-ATL services, it seems that AF has had some impact. There has been substantial rumor that AF has a strong influence in diverting their attention away from the Atlantic.

One would think that their relationship with AF would help them to do YUL, ATL, DTW etc.

Surprised that no one has mentioned DTW-FCO yet.

That would be a good SkyTeam hub-to-hub route, with strong feed on both ends.

With the cuts in TATL service by the JV, I wouldn't expect any of the new routes to be TATL.

I sure hope one of the new long-haul destinations is Washington IAD..one can dream! Personally I can see ICN as a future destination..with Alitalia and Korean Air both being in Skyteam..

Also, this is my first post on airliners.net!
I want a 787 for Christmas, thank you.

The New Alitalia CAI, has incorporated several airplanes orders from Airbus (A320 now converted mostly to A319 and A332) from the former AirOne (AP) , now part of the new group. On top an order to Embrare for E175 and E190 has benn placed, part of this last E-jets has been already delivered.
AirOne brand today, is the smart carrier of the group.

Most of my Persian students flew Alitalia because they were cheapest out of Washington-Dulles to Tehran -- though there were frequent complaints of tatty planes and mechanical problems.

Given that Alitalia spent $0 on advertising, and sent their most problematic equipment to IAD, they had a surprisingly loyal core of flyers.

They themselves drove away the clients.

While unlikely, that would indeed be fantastic to see Alitalia at the new F concourse in ATL! My only concern about FCO as a connecting hub compared to CDG or AMS is it's location. It's a slightly longer flight to get there, and in many cases flies over or past the connection opportunities.

Well, new AZ is very different from the previous one.
They have a new management very capable, a large number of new aircrafts are going to be put in use and the new Magnifica Class ( actually only available on the new 332 but very soon the 777 will start the refitting too) really sets a standard for this class ( that is a J not a F).
Still a lot of improvement has to be done but I think they are on right way.

Are we likely to see AZ return to European destinations which were cut down through the years?

I'm specifically asking about Dublin, but as a generalism, does the new AZ feel that it has the stamina to compete again with some of the low costs to cities like Dublin, Manchester, Barcelona etc?

Exactly my thoughts. The DTW-FCO route operates fairly well seasonally, and I would imagine with the JV it could operate seamlessly year-round. I'm not sure, but are there a lot of Middle Eastern connection opportunities from FCO? If so, this may be a way to add some connecting traffic from DTW given the densely populated Middle Eastern community in Metro Detroit. A lot of that traffic ends up on AF to CDG, but I know a lot of my friends here in Detroit would much rather connect through anywhere other than CDG.
Keep Climbing...

Didn't Alitalia operate it way back in the 1980s? Alitalia and Northwest had a partnership back in the late 1990s early 2000s before NWA joined Skyteam, with the old NWA/KLM alliance with COA and Alitalia. It was operated with NWA DC-10s then to both FCO and MXP. Then there is seasonal service every summer to FCO operated by DAL equip. I would love to see Alitalia equip at DTW though.

Most of the middle eastern traffic to DTW connects thru AMS. Detroit suburbs have a decent size Italian and Italian American population too

There has been rumors about FCO/MXP-DEL but isnt Alitalia already code-shared with a 9W DEL-MXP already? Increasing traffic it seems....
If it wasn't for AI and those money mongers sitting in the parliament, 9W would have been as big as SQ...:(

Yes, they already codeshare on MXP-DEL flight and they will go to expand this deal with these new flights.
