Airlines With Previous Service To Washington IAD

Sat Nov 26, 2011 12:51 am

For Wikipedia is not always true, I would appreciate some help in finding carriers with previous service to Dulles. I know the obvious ones, such as Independence Air (before they collapsed), Alitalia, and BMI, but I am pretty oblivious to some others. Have there ever been any Eastern European carriers (besides Turkish, when operates now)? Any help would be fantastic. Thanks!
I want a 787 for Christmas, thank you.

BWIA...(now Caribbean Airlines)...used to fly POS-IAD and POS-TAB-IAD I believe.

There are rumours of BW resuming service possibly in 2012.

I was going to say Ghana Airways.

But that was BWI, not IAD!

How about VIASA, the old Venezuelan airline?

Air Canada Jazz used to operate YOW-IAD and YUL-IAD. Those were terminated in early 2011. Now all Air Canada/Jazz flights to Washington operate to DCA.

How long did the AI service last?

Also, Ozark flew into IAD back in the late 60s to the mid to late 70s, before it moved to BWI.

PEOPLExpress used to fly IAD-EWR and IAD-MIA back in the mid-1980's. Fares to EWR were as low as $19 on some flights and as low as $49 on the MIA flights.

Western operated SLC-IAD-DCA to get around the perimeter restrictions at DCA.

America West also did something similar, operating DCA to places like OMA, DSM and CMH.

Yes, I do remember AS serving both DCA and IAD back then. I presume they dropped IAD the moment they got the beyond-perimeter slot for a second daily SEA-DCA service.

Another domestic carrier that served IAD was the ill-fated N7 (to LAS).

Let's not forget that FL will soon join this list, when their IAD-ATL flights are terminated next summer.

Are you sure about that? OMA, DSM, and CMH are not outside the perimeter rule at DCA. There were dozens of times, IO flew DCA-OMA on America West and it was always non stop.

In fact, at some point, Western Airlines, even flew OMA-DCA.

SierraAir is correct. The idea of those flights were to get pax to LAS and PHX, which were outside the perimeter. Once the perimeter exemption slots were granted to LAS and PHX, the need to stop inside the perimeter was eliminated.

I believe it was codeshare flight on AA's IAD-LAX.

I don't have any personal experience seeing this flight, but Qantas did show up in random terminal maps during the early 90s and Wikipedia's Qantas destinations shows Dulles as a terminated station. It could very well have been a flight where QF gave the IAD-LAX portion to another carrier a la LY at BWI.

This is wikipedia's source (not sure how accurate this is): http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1996/1996%20-%200811.html

For some reason it shows Boston as well and I'm doubting that. Also the cited link seems to mention some sort of codeshare but I don't think it applies to the cities listed.

When I check back, AA did operate IAD-LAX back then so they could very well have just carried a QF code as a normal codeshare. The flight carries the QF code today, but perhaps it was one of the few to do the same back in the 1990s... If this is the case, then there does seem to be a lack of clarity about this...A lot of other codeshare cities aren't mentioned.

I remember going to IAD in the mid/late 70s when my sister lived near Manassas. I used to see North Central Convairs and Ozark DC9s right under the obs deck. I recall the old Pan Am 707s and 747s going to LHR, FRA and I believe TXL too, IIRC. I remember even the old BA VC-10 there on occasion. North Central and Southern became Republic and then got to see those along with " Continental's" New York Air DC9s. I loved seeing the Concordes there and the Braniff flying colors too! IIRC AA even served BOS with a DC10 around that time. UA had its "ocean to Ocean" service to LAX back then too, with DC10s.

Happy Holidays! Kevin

In Summer 1987, mainline CO service was available to:

ACA
ATL
BOS
CHS
CLE
DEN
DTW
FLL
GSP
BDL
IAH
ISP
JAX
TYS
LAX (733 transcon)
MEX
MIA
YUL
MSY
EWR
LGA
MCO
YOW
SFO (733 transcon)
TPA
PBI
HPN
ORH

Presidential Airways BAe-146 service (operating as CO Jet Express) was available to:

CAK
ALB
BHM
CHS
CMH
DAB
HSV
IND

MLB
JFK

HOT
MGW
ORF
ROA

Quite a comprehensive operation.

No there hasnt. However, about 5-6 years ago, I was flying FRA-IAD on LH. I happened to exit the customs area with some people, who as it turned out, were upper management at LOT. There were higher ups, from IAD management, who met them outside customs. The management at IAD, started to give them a tour, of sorts, of IAD at that time.

I thinkl there were rumors, prior to that, LOT was interested in IAD. I thought maybe something would come of all that but, so far, nothing has.
