Was There A QF A380 Accident At LAX On OCT 3?

Wed Nov 30, 2011 1:07 am

I was looking though some A380 photos, and I saw a photo of an QF A380 with the upper half it's left wing fence missing, so I wonder, was there an QF A380 accident on October 3 2011 at LAX?

Can you post the pic? It would be quite helpful...

I wish I knew how, because I wanted to show the photo. I guess I may need to learn how to do that.

Hmmmmm, interesting. I know for us, we've had A320's hit with catering trucks and whatnot, but our wings are close the the ground compared to an A380. Possibly something simple like a bird strike or lighning damage or something, and they CDLed it with a minor performance it to get it back to a station that had a spare? Does anyone know if the A380 wingtip fence is 2 separate pieces (top and bottom), unlike an A320 that is one solid fence?

I believe it was a catering truck hit it, after inspection the flight continued without the wingtip fence... obviously a slight fuel burn penalty but nothing serious.

How on earth is a catering truck supposed to knock to the top half of a fence off? QF don't load any catering through door 3 upstairs, only through door 4, which is well clear of the wing... Surely a catering truck would have hit the lower part of the fence rather than the upper half?

I've seen catering vehicles using U3L. When the A380 came along a lot of specially modified trucks came that could lift that high... then again it is quite far from the doors to the wingtip and as you point out on the top is damaged. Just reporting what I had heard... anyone wants to correct that go right ahead.

I've seen a few good photos of them recently - my company used to make them. It's mostly sheetmetal with machined internal structure. The upper and lower portions of the fence are separate parts of the structure, but the whole structure (wingtip + fence) are a single unit attached to the end of the wing.

Sorry -- not taking a stab at you! I'm just wondering how stupid the catering truck driver must have been to hit the top part of the fence (and how lucky they are for not damaging the wing at the same time).

Thanks! I was thinking that since the fence on the A380 is so large compared to the A320, and based on that picture it was a very clean cut, that it had an upper and lower portion compared to the A320 where it is all one fence.

They are not stupid   Such accidents happen a lot around aircraft with all vehicles and catering trucks. My brother was onboard a 747 in Copenhagen when a catering truck ran into the aft fuselage at 30 kilometers per hour. Large hole in the fuselage and that trip cancelled... Was long ago but such things happen...
