SQ 744 F Off Rwy At SIN.., Any Info?

Fri Dec 02, 2011 7:05 pm

Hello all, can someone elaborate on this one ?

"A Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400 freighter, registration 9V-SFL performing flight SQ-7381 from Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) to Singapore (Singapore), was landing on one of Singapore's runways 02 but veered off the runway before coming to a stop at about 16:40L (08:40Z). No injuries and no damage occurred, the runway however was closed for about 80 minutes until the aircraft had taxied to the apron on its own power and a runway inspection was carried out."

The article very much capture what happened. About 10 SQ and MI flights was diverted to Paya Lebar airport in Singapore. A few flights got delayed departure. The runway soon opened and operations went back to normal.
A very small incident.

Wow.. the old Paya Lebar airport, Changi's predecessor! Heard it still has its 70s architecture intact.. read about it in an architecture magazine.. I've always wanted to visit it.. must be quite an experience for those who had used it in the 70s. Almost like going back in time.

I saw the incident.

I was sitting at the T1 rest area with view of 2L. I didn't see the A/C touch down but I saw the landing roll and the A/C skidded to the left and right of the RWY, exited the RWY under own power and was under emergency crew inspection for about half an hour. I saw 1 A/C (looked like a 320) go around shortly after. I also listened to Singapore Ground and one of the pilots informed the ground controller that engineers checked the A/C out, it would taxi under own power but would be monitored by engineers and fire crews. A few minutes later fire crews went on the (closed) runway and sprayed water onto it for a fair while. Later yellow trucks came and did some work i couldn't identify. I departed SIN on QF10 to MEL that evening and the RWY was still closed for outbounds according to our captain but I observed multiple inbounds land on 2L as we were taxiing. Weather wasn't the best but nothing special for SIN(as shown on avherald). It was weird though there were hundreds of passengers relaxing nobody seemed to have noticed anything. Also shortly after to the incident I was listening to Singapore Clearance and the controller advised multiple A/C (e.g. a KL 77W to DPS which was ready to push) that outbound delays were 2h at that point.

Even though it was a minor incident it was pretty unsettling to watch.

Thanks for sharing what you saw. Clearly it's a difference between a.nutters and regular(normal) passengers.

One question, what kind of surface has the terrain adjacent to the runway ? I'm guessing that if they taxied without help out of the position they ended up after the incident, it wasn't mud or soft terrain ?

Thanks !!

That's the second incident for SQ in a very short time span..

Glad to see that neither situation had any serious ramifications.

I saw the aircraft apply strong left and right rudder inputs whilst skidding but it ended up being on 2L and vacated the RWY via a taxiway. Not sure about the terrain but most part of the 744 never left the RWY and it had enough momentum to correct its rollout path.

Indeed. After the 777 incident one A.netter suggested that those pilots would be grilled due to SQ's perfect 777 record.
Would SQ have a pineapple prepared for these B744F pilots to sit on?
Is SQ harder on their pilots than average?

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. The B777 Fleet has had many incidents you are just not aware of them.
Etihad Girl, You're a great way to fly.
