G4 Leaving TWF For Good

Sat Dec 03, 2011 1:18 pm

G4 has announced they are leaving TWF for good. they started this service less than a year ago, then suspended it for a time this fall, and restarted it, now they say they are finished.

Two flights a week from TWF-LAS is what has been operating. I do beleive that WN's BOI-LAS flights have really diluted anything G4 thought they could accomplish on this.

It's too bad that AS/QX won't reopen TWF and IDA. I think the State of Idaho really got stiffed by AS/QX Q400's.

Twin Falls didn't work with the Baby Dash 8s. Once Southwest entered Boise, people drove to Boise to get cheaper fares. Horizon couldn't make the :30 hop to Boise economically work on the Dash 8-200 so they had to end the service. Had the Q400 come on line earlier using it nonstop to Seattle from Twin could have been interesting (but that didn't work for Idaho Falls/Pocatello). Once QX left Twin, it was hard to justify re-opening it, even with the Sun Valley diversions (which eventually moved to Boise as well). Twin worked with Metroliners, but never worked with anything bigger for Horizon. Twin Falls died for Horizon long before the Q400. In reality, Pocatello was also a Metro city. The Dash 8 didn't work well there either, but it lived longer.

I was surprised G4 even announced this route to begin with. Then once it was seasonally suspended, I knew it wasn't going to last.

I think lot's of places were victims of the 200 leaving and the 400 arriving. LMT, OTH, PDT just here in Oregon, Guess AS wanted a larger regional carrier, AS consolidated their fleet to just 2 types 737's & Q400's, that process seemed to work well and made some real money, what else could you want, as a shareholder. But as an enthusiast or traveller it does blow.

Seems like they are having better success with IDA however.
The LAX service commence two weeks ago which adds to their existing Vegas and Phoenix flights.

Didn't they start IDA-PSP flights as well?

The problem for TWF is that it's too far from Sun Valley to work as a ski destination for the majors. It's about 90 miles to Sun Valley from TWF, and it takes about 2 hours to drive there.

I seem to recall in the 80s or 90s, UA was flying weekends from ORD to TWF.

Back in the days of regulation, Hughes Air West flew DC-9s out of TWF to SLC (and on to LAS and LAX), BOI (with continuing service to GEG and SEA), and to RDD (providing one-stop service to SFO).
