OAG Changes 12/8/2011:AA/DL/F9/NK/UA

Wed Dec 07, 2011 2:17 pm

INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

OMG! I just check this out.. 1 MD80, 1 CR7, and 2 ER4! REALLY! What in the world are they thinking! They are already bare thin right now. Here's hoping United puts 4x 319/320 on the route to pick up the slack.

Or perhaps Delta will come in and offer 3x E70/CR9 service and pick up more business travelers that AA seems to be letting go..

either kinda way, poor AA..

AA is readjusting their non-LHR schedule to Europe. The Caribean has to be pulling back the schedule for the slow summer season.

The question is will this be the last summer ofMEM-AMS? June July and August are pretty much prime time to europe and they are slashing. This flight cant be downsized anymore

Could this be in response to AF flying the A380 to ATL in the summer?

Edit to say: Should have said that this might be an indication that AF intends to use the A380's capacity in the summer to ATL, not to make it seem as though I have some evidence that AF is indeed using the A380 to ATL.

I'll be astonished if this returns next summer (although I was wrong about summer 2011) with AA having slashed virtually all non-hub flying from BOS. There's no connecting feed at either end apart from overflow from the other hubs.

IMO it makes little sense for AA & BA to both offer daytime services eastbound with departure times only 40 minutes apart. Subject to available aircraft, BA could upgauge the morning departure to a 744.

I find it interesting that NK is reducing these markets from LAS so soon after jumping in.

Ultimately, I can see AA reducing JFK to hubs & intercontinental service with a comprehensive codeshare with B6 for other domestic destinations and the Caribbean.

Currently, the schedules for summer 2012 are showing 1 DL 763 and 2 AF 772s on ATL-CDG.

Hate to say it but this flight has really stopped making sense - the O&D traffic for Amsterdam and points beyond can't possibly be enough to justify even a not-daily flight, and at this point there's very little feed into MEM for this or any other flight, and even less from cities that can't just as easily go through ATL or elsewhere.

Is it melodramatic or overstatement to say that when this flight goes away the MEM hub is officially, 100% "Delta has left the hub building" done for?

Perhaps the Wizard is launching daily flights via hot air balloon to counter the Wicked Witch of the West's no-frills broomstick service? Or maybe it's a flight with self-help doctor on board? Who knows...

Don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but WN is adding seasonal BWI-TUS service that will run from February to April.

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Trimming FAT-GDL in January makes sense. Numbers in January and February are always miserable. That Y4 didn't cut might confirm what I've heard, that after a slow start Y4 is now the leader in the market. October numbers were the 3rd best since the service to GDL restarted in April, even though AM was X2.

Well, IMHO they are mostly eliminating overflying of MIA from JFK. I don't know if those flights flew last Summer. I don't think it is meaningful. I think the ERJ markets drops are more filled with future foreboding, but there are lots of ways to read the tea leaves.

I think it is interesting that DTW gained a CDG flight and ATL lost one.

Shocking really. Time to move on to next week's focus city. They already announced a crew base out there!

Maybe, but I still think ORD is the bulk of their losses.

Thanks for the updates

That being said, WTH is this? Mistype or misfile?
Quoting FURUREFA (Reply 10):
Usually a code-share misfile.

Yeah, there is a "suppression" code that is supposed to designate duplicates from "parent" flights. That one was marked in their filing as a parent mistakenly I'm sure.

Quoting SouthernDC9 (Reply 11):
Is it melodramatic or overstatement to say that when this flight goes away the MEM hub is officially, 100% "Delta has left the hub building" done for?

Instead of "Delta has left the building", I'd say "James Brown is dead". LOL

Really?

It's a cornerstone (1 or only 5) with a billion dollar, brand new terminal.

That would be a real mess if they did.

We'll probably see some new markets or frequencies added elsewhere, I can't imagine AA giving up any JFK slots.

It could be nothing, but if this indeed is a permanent schedule down-gauge I wouldn't be surprised....I don't think their product is well-received. Some one correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't their customer retention rate extremely low? It seems like they've stagnated at FLL and it seems to me the typical narrative for them is that they do well out of the gate when they start flights, but once people get over the $19 fares and realize they pretty much have to pay for everything else, they prefer to just go with the other carriers and not have to deal with the stress of what "a la cart" services they'll have to pay for.

I've always been skeptical of they're FR-like plan, I just don't think there is the stomach for it in the US as much as people already complain about the extras the legacies charge for, just my opinion though.

Sad to see this route struggle, but there's hardly any business case for a flight between MEM and AMS without a lot of feed on the MEM end. It makes me wonder why MEM, for the decades that they have been a hub, didn't capitalize on their status more in bringing business to the area and growing the city like CLT.

I have impeccable intuition, I for one have no use for numbers, as I've said at least 100 times numbers are overrated, 60% of Americans agree with me.

If the flight is such a performer thank goodness they're scaling it back, I like airlines that play a little hard to get.

perhaps the MEM-AMS flight is only going out on days when the hub has the most flights? Just looking at the schedule it seems MEM is kinda bare bones as far as flights go on Saturdays.

The flight has been over 80% connecting and they have shut most of the hub since last year. I'm hoping you are also practicing your sarcasm. Int'l O&D data can't be posted by federal law, so you will just have to trust me.

Interesting, but sensible. DTW is a better location for many of the connections that flow over ATL to Europe. The joint venture hasn't done much to rationalize the PMNW/PMDL markets to this point - most cities where NW was bigger still have more AMS service and most where DL was bigger still have more CDG service. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's hard for me to believe that the post-merger profit maximizing strategy is coincidentally the same as the pre-merger status quo.

If this were true, the flight would be operating daily during the peak travel months to Europe on an A333 instead of less-than-daily on a 763.

So was PIT to USAir a while back... At least JFK is an O&D gold mine tho, and I doubt AA will just walk away from that. JFK is still very much a key market even with the masses that are DL and B6. pooping farting doggies

I guess it's doing alright. It is back, and without the safety net they were given the past 2 years. Plus it looks like it's back to 5x weekly. Didn't DL try to market their frequent flyer miles program to PIT travelers? I wonder how much of a success/failure that was...

Is AA bailing on ORD-YYC altogether? Or will it come back in the late fall with the flights to other ski destinations? And didn't AA sign an itnerline agreement with West Jet? That would allow AA to feed some traffic into the West Jet system at YYC.

Edit to say: Should have said that this might be an indication that AF intends to use the A380's capacity in the summer to ATL, not to make it seem as though I have some evidence that AF is indeed using the A380 to ATL.

I see about zero likelihood of this happening. Don't know what, if anything, would need to be done to make ATL "A380 ready" but I'm pretty sure they haven't bothered to do it.

Could the NK reductions in LAS be to free up metal for the new AZA station and DFW buildup? I do not think they get new planes on the property until mid year ( I said THINK...not sure about that).

It's certainly possible, but logically they wouldn't reduce successful markets to fund speculative new markets.

That may be true. I think Europeans may have a greater tolerance for ULCC's given their lengthy histories with charter carriers that make US Airways' product look like Singapore Airlines in comparison. Slot restrictions at key hub airports have also protected the large European national carriers -- leading to unmet demand which is satisfied by the ULCC's at alternative airports.
