Melbourne Airport poised to spread its wings
Andrew Heasley
December 8, 2011

MELBOURNE Airport is set to expand, with plans to build a $300 million passenger terminal and improve freeway access.

Just days after Sydney Airport announced plans to shuffle airlines between existing terminals by 2019, Melbourne is gearing up to have a new interconnected domestic terminal running by mid-2014.

Melbourne's new Terminal Four building will be built to the south of the existing T3 building used by Virgin Australia.

The development is designed to maintain a key advantage over Sydney Airport by having all terminals connected under one roof, allowing easy movement between airlines for domestic and international flights. The Melbourne redevelopment will include a new multi-level car park, widened roads, new baggage facilities and several extra plane gates.

Interesting, unless TT have something up their sleeve or Air Australia expands like crazy will a whole new terminal be needed? Maybe move JQ over from T1 to free up space for QF expansion?

And what are the SYD plans? Other than move QFLink and JQ over to an expanded T3 to free up room in T2 for VA what can they really do? And now I think about I don't think that T3 could be expanded without flattening the QF engineering empire...

Now I'm on the topic does anyone know what BNE has planned? At peak times the terminal (especially the VA end, but QF and JQ as well) is sagging with the strain of have everyone under one roof.

Lol did you see what you wrote? Qantas and Expansion in the same sentence! its more like Jetstar Expansion haha   just having a joke.

But i seriously dont see JQ moving from the QF terminal, that wouldnt be very good for the premium pax coming from a QF flight going to a JQ flight....

And really, is TT going to expand that much? i think they should move DJ to the New T4 and combine the T2 and T3 for a big International terminal, as Melbourne is the new Sydney. More oportunity of getting more international flights into MEL, instead of SYD because of all its constraints.
Connections are basically on par with SYD, but just a better layout, you dont have to catch buses in MEL to get to another terminal. But im just a Flight Attendant and thats my 2 cents worth   what would i know? right?

Have you seen the Master plans released this week... I'm sure this will certainly resolve the current issues faced by SYD...

i have, but its 2019 .. MEL will be 2013/2014 .... so MEL has the oportunity here to take reward of being completed earlier then the SYD master plan... as MEL is a much better airport

Better in many ways... I ain't going to argue... Another advantage MEL ops aren't curfew restricted as opposed to SYD...

2015-2020 ties in nicely with MEL getting its 3rd runway (16R/34L - and extended 9/27) giving it the same runway capacity as SYD (if not more given curfew free and a longer 9/27).

It must have been a slow news day, given that this is just a story about the masterplan approved quite a while ago. There's still very little detail overall, given nothing has actually been officially decided yet, so we will just have to wait and see what it ends up looking like.

One thing, JQ will likely need to move out of T1 and the new T4 will likely be a good option for them to gain space to grow. It's not ideal, given the distance from QFs T1, but it's likely their best option available.

An option that they could look at for the new T3 pier would be to have direct access to T2, with 3 levels (Domestic, International arrivals and international departures). This could see NZ, EY and SQ sharing the facilities, in much the same way that SYD is planning.

Overall, much to be looked at yet, but atleast it's a start.

I am from Queensland but i cannot help but notice the jealousy of the Melbourne spotters, board posters and airport officials towards every other city in this country.

Firstly Sydney is the busiest airport and has more airlines than any other city.It may not be as accommodating as Melbourne and Adelaide in having a one terminal philosophy but it is the number one airport.

I could not help but notice even in the CEO of MEL airport making comments such as the new terminal being nearly as busy as Perth is today and twice as busy as OOL is now.

SO WHAT !

There just seems to be a attitude amongst Victorians that they deserve to be the best. But realistically they don't.

I'm not a plane spotter or airport official, I'm just interested and somewhat involved with the development of the city I live in - and that naturally extends to aviation

This is relevant, because? Do I need to roll out the stats that point to the diminishing relevance of SYD as an international gateway to Australia over the past 10 years?

again, relevance?

It's a soundbite (or textbite if you will) for the mass media to pick up and report on. It's also a fact.

Eaglefarm4, its all in the eye of the beholder

Us Vics are a proud bunch, just as you are about your state. No need to come on here and try and stir the pot like that.

As for the terminal, Hopefully the end result is a good one. Id hate to see a cheaper version built just to suit TT and JQ, to the standards that I can see the former expecially wanting built.
