Japan Airlines Announces Routes For New Boeing 787

Thu Dec 08, 2011 3:03 pm

In addition to BOS, new JAL 787 flights announced. Keeping my fingers crossed for JAL to announce NRT-MIA (with the 787) in the near future .

Nice! HND-PEK is not surprising. The choice of DEL and DME is interesting! I can't wait to see more carriers receive their 787s.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

So far we have:

HND-PEK
NRT-BOS
NRT-DEL
NRT-DME

Are all of these brand new routes or does JL currently serve any of them? If they do serve them, what aircraft are the 787s replacing?

I'm also hoping for a MIA flight!
Is there any service from Japan to ORD at the moment?

Cheers,

BOS is totally new, PEK they already go to, but not sure if from HND or NRT. DME and DEL are existing. I would think an MIA flight would be perfect for 787, I could see good loads.

They fly the 77W now. It is my understanding that flight does pretty well, I am guessing it will stay a 77W.

Why is JL installing an old outdated J seat on the 787? It's not even lie flat?

BOS is the only new route for JL

DEL and DME are served by a 772 and PEK is served by a 763

Surprising too ... athough it doesn't specifically mention this in the article. Was this information confirmed elsewhere?

Seems odd to have one HND route and the rest from NRT. That would involve ferrying airplanes between the two or separate fleets.

Would be now if we had some dates of these services to commence, yes we have BOS, but the HND-PEK is of more interest to me.

Or they could fly the plane to Osaka or Sapporo from one airport and return to the other. JL serves both cities from NRT and HND.

I am surprised they are not building long haul from some of the secondary Japanese markets, I could see a 787 working well from some of these cities.

Pretty pumped about the NRT-BOS route...

thoughts on what it might cost to ride in coach? $1200 seem reasonable?

I'm still hoping, but rumor has it AA will operate it with the 77W.

Thats a lot of airplane for AA to launch a route to Japan they can't feed with domestic passengers. Except perhaps from Tampa and Orlando.

What I really want to know is when and where (and if) they'll be flying domestically for a few months to build up experience.

I've been on an NH 787. Gotta get on a JL one before I leave Japan in July next year!

It's really not a lot of plane at all. Florida-NRT is around 130 PDEW. And that is just to Narita. 787 is too low density for the fares, which are not particularly high.

AA, JL, NH and UA all have daily flights between ORD-NRT. UA used to fly to KIX some time ago.

Perhaps after their fleet grows.

Perhaps we'll also see LAX-NGO/KIX as these were previously served with MD11s once they have a good number of a/c. Seems like the 788s would be a good fit for these markets.

The two bases mean most likely differing cabin configurations.
Since BOS, DME, & DEL are all long-haul flights while the HND-PEK is a short-haul int'l flight that could be operated by a common with domestic flights.

JL has posted on their website that they will receive their first 787 in late March, yet the start of the NRT-BOS remains unchanged. They are going to have a very short time between receipt and start of a long-haul run. Not something that occurred previously at this ultra-conservative airline but this is not the same airline it was a few years ago, when it took a good two months of training just to get domestic services started on the 738. I guess we will see if the schedule sticks.

Personnaly, I think the NRT-BOS will not start until at the earliest June.

The airline, known as JAL, said the in-flight entertainment system for its 787s will include electronic manga...The carrier is collaborating with major publisher Shogakukan Inc. and eBook Initiative Japan Co. on the service.

A neat feature to add. It will be the first of its kind. How suiting for JAL. Should be interesting to see how successful it is. I know some friends would be more then happen to try it out on the new route from BOS.

I've flown JL DEL-NRT-DEL both on JA707J, the smaller loads of a 787 should make the route a lot more viable than a 772, though that said the plane was 100% on the DEL-NRT leg and I was upped to Y+, on the way back, loads were 40% at beast across the plane. The other good thing will be that the 787 will have better interiors than the 777-200ER

I wonder if JL will consider adding HND-LHR to compliment the BA service and the NRT service?

Do they still have slots left?
Next Flights: LHR-OSL (738), OSL-CPH (320), CPH-LHR (321), LHR-HEL (359), HEL-LHR (359)

They would need an early morning (around 0600 local) slot at LHR. Then turnaround departure slot at around 0900/1100 range to fit with the operation from HND.
Perhaps BA can assist with the slot process.
There used to be two daily 744s amongst BA & JL is the past, so the market potential is still there.

What will happen to the 2 772 & the 763 that will be replaced. Will JL use them to existing destinations or restart old destinations or start new destinations

I expect that 2 more 772s will be sent to HNL to replace the 767. These aircraft will either be reconfigured or replace 2-class 772ERs on other routes. Either way, they will likely end up flying more 777s to HNL. The 767s that they replace will then likely lead to the retirement of some older non-ER 767-300s in the fleet.

Why the biggest shiniest plane? They could easily operate such a short route with a 772, at least to get going. Will just the best product be enough reason?

Listen to me. Short. I've become desensitized.

A 772 cannot easily operate this route with a full passenger and cargo load, especially west-bound.
