Lusaka Airport Busier Than Ever.

Fri Dec 09, 2011 4:44 pm

I was sitting in the SAA lounge at Lusaka airport on Dec.3rd and was treated to excellent viewing of planes from around the region.
Kenyan Airways B772
Ethiopian B752
Air Namibia E135
Air Malawi ATR42
SAA B738
Pro Air B1900
and the best is President George Bush personal B762.

Zambia is really up and coming and I think the various airlines proves the point.

It's a shame Zambezi Airlines went bust in October.

Proves that there is substantial traffic, but there are only 3 airlines in the South and East Africa market.

What was he doing there...?

Is there really that much demand for Kenyan Airways to send their 777-200?

Given that the 772 is scheduled to operate to LUN, KQ have clearly determined that there is sufficient demand, whether from passengers or cargo or both, to do that.

KLM Airlines will start flights to Lusaka starting next spring. It will 3 times a week with the A330-200.

They have a lot of cargo, usually is a B767 and also a E190 for the night flight....

Lagos is also another example of cargo heavy flight... usually around 100-150 pax but tons of cargo...

LUN will get KLM 332 and also Precision air B737 DAR-FBM-LUN-DAR.

I also saw Bush B767 in DAR a few days back.

Really? I thought that they were sending such a large aircraft simply for the sake of passenger comfort...

I was more aiming at having someone with greater knowledge of the market trends in the region to tell me what is the exact reason.
Which I got:

Thanks for the answer. I suppose that they also have more premium passengers to Lagos than they have to Lusaka.

Tomorrow's flight leaving NBO goes to LUN and LLW with a full load of PAX split between the two destinations - 772
There is also a 738 which goes to LUN then HRE and this is heavily over sold too!

It's President Bush Junior (who is a true friend of Africa). I don't know if he owns the plane or a charter. But it looks some what official.

They probably don't know what to do with the aircraft during the day. They have a 777 arriving every morning from BKK, and departing at night. There aren't many markets they can send the 777 during the day.

Operating a triangle with 777 within Africa must be very expensive.

That was my thought too but I guess that cargo makes it worth it...

I have some doubts regarding president Bush's 767:

- Never heard that he has one, but, this could theoretically be true. Registration would prove the point.
- "President" Bush? I thought there has been a new president since 2008...
- "Friend of Africa"? As far as i know the only country outside the US that Bush junior has been was Canada. And even after presidency his passport is propably pretty empty...

I cannot believe how much Lusaka has grown. I remember going there as a child and it was nothing...I remember going back a couple years ago and it had really grown in traffic. Cannot imagine what it looks like now...I need to find an excuse to head back down Zambia way!

Typically a president is referred to by the title President even after he is no longer in office.

Would it be safe to say that LUN and Zambia in general has benefited from the economic, social and political meltdown in Zimbabwe as a result of Robert Mugabe's rape of the country? I remember when my father visited Victoria Falls in 1985, he said he felt safe on the Zimbabwe-side of the bridge, but the Zambia-side was a different story. From my personal experience there in 2003, and from what I've read, it almost seems like the complete opposite is now true.

That is one good looking plane! Nice!
Will they be able to fill an A332?
Range wise, could they upgrade to A333; with time?
