QF 12th A380 VH-OQL Has Arrived In SYD!

Sat Dec 17, 2011 8:54 am

Hi All,

QF's 12th A380 has just arrived in SYD tonight @ 18:58...
This will enable QF to operate daily A380 services SYD-LAX and MEL-LAX.
This also raises the question regarding the status of VH-OQA?
Will this bird join the QF fleet soon to introduce the 4 x week QF127-128 SYD-HKG-SYD service?

So, how many QF A380s are still left to be delivered in the near future (i.e the next year or two); I know that some have been deferred to later this decade.

2, numbers 13 & 14 in 2013/14 IIRC

Will the LAX-JFK service on QF see an A380 anytime soon?

In my humble opinion I do no suspect to see the QF 380 operating between LAX / JFK for any time.

The only way I could imagine it would be if say as either promotional / marketing event in NYC to show it off to the media, but unlikely, as the current A330 operating the 107/108 has a pretty quick turn around.

Who knows?

Not very likely, if it's upgraded it's likely to be back to a B744, which are likely to be on QF107/108 for most of this decade.

Wonder what the difference in operating costs is between the 744ER and the A380? If there's virtually no difference then we could see them running the A380 in the event of a upgauge...

One slightly off topic question that comes from the LAX-JFK thing -- could AA 'charter' a QF aircraft for the LAX-JFK segment as their own flight (hence making it salable it as a domestic flight), with QF retaining their QF107/8 code as a codeshare of sorts? If they could draw domestic pax then it would be an A380 overnight.

With # 12 only slightly scheduled and 13 & 14 still coming maybe DFW will see he Whale Jet. Santiago, Chile could see it too. Sydney to Sao Pauo would really be awesome, that would be pioneering in the Qantas tradition of ultra long flights.

South America is probably the least likely destination to see a QF380.

It's Qantas, the only thing they're good at is flying to the two big Ls of the world or former British colonies.

To my knowledge, DFW cannot accommodate the 380 yet until certain adjustments and improvements are made to the field, taxiways etc.

I expect QF to commence A380 SYD-DFW services in 2014 after numbers 13 & 14 are delivered. I understand that the works at DFW are minor and the biggest is some taxiway fillets and could be ready quite quickly when QF advises the airport.

Have you ever been to Texas, the land of Bigger is better. DFW was built after the 747 was born so it was made for BIG airplanes. IF Qantas wants to fly the A380 to Texas the DFW folks will make it ready.

I heard one of the QF32 Captains (the check-captain who had joined the aircraft in Singapore) speak at a charity event last week. He confirmed that VH-OQA is intended to return to the skies and test flights are scheduled in the not too distant future.

The last two frames prior to six being defered are MSN091 and MSN102, delivery scheduled for Q3 2012.

I'm suprised no one else has mentioned it (unless I missed it) but this aircraft completes QF first A380 order (12). The next aircraft are from the second order for 8.

I would say you will wait a few more years for the A380 but B787 your going to be waiting a long time... Probably another 13 years... Unless of course your waiting to see the B787 in general and not QF colors...

Fully agree. Going daily has already been announced. There is no way there will be a capacity reduction on SYD-DFW. I don't see more than 7x weekly on 747s either. The only other possibility would be MEL/BNE-DFW with a 787 before SYD-DFW is upgauged to an A380.

Big engine explosion, hole in wing (remember?)...

They probably sat around arguing about what to do, how to do it, who should do it, who should pay, when it should be done, where it should be done, who should be in charge, who should pay the bills and who should reimburse and the reporting line and so on. They probably only started the actual repairs last week...

I saw Nancy parked outside on the apron this morning. I did not have a good look but it seems only the inboard engines are installed (without cowling). The outboard engines appeared to be still missing. Maybe I have a better look this afternoon - was cycling along the airport perimeter and did not stop to have good look.

IF Qantas wants to fly the A380 to Texas the DFW folks will make it ready.

There seems to be a bunch of 'little work' for Category VI aircraft:
http://www.dfwairport.com/vfr2030/airfield/P1_027127.php

DFW has submitted to the FAA a proposed opperating plan:
http://www.faa.gov/airports/engineer...os/media/dfw_A380_mods_request.pdf

It looks like some further discussion/approval is required. DFW's attempt to have their 150' wide runways approved for the A380 was declined. 18L/36R is a 200' wide runway with 25' aprons (vs. 40' recommended by the FAA for category VI aircraft). Since 150' runways are now approved for the A380, I would assume 200' with 'old school' shoulders would also be approved? But if I read into the first link, it looks like the runway and taxiway shoulders must be widened at DFW for the ADG VI aircraft? (I'm asking as I'm not sure of the FAA decision.)

However, until RR can prove sustained maximum thrust takeoffs, I do not expect the A380 at DFW. I also expect QF to wait for the 2013/2014 examples (lighter and should have the first RR engine PIP by then).

Nancy might not see DFW, but I'd bet she would go further than SIN. (say SYD-PEK, or even SIN-LHR, etc.) I suspect she won't see LAX for a few years. However, once the engines have built full confidence, I would expect to see her back at LAX.

ps (late edit):
DFW will be A380 ready as soon as an airline gives them a 9 months 'heads up.':
http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/11...a-new-dfw-airport-takes-shape.html

"Fegan said that the airport could be ready for an A380 within nine months and that British Airways has discussed using the plane on its DFW-London Heathrow routes in 2014. Emirates Airline, which will launch daily service from DFW to Dubai in February using the Boeing 777, has also indicated it may use A380s on its U.S. routes."

It's Qantas, the only thing they're good at is flying to the two big Ls of the world or former British colonies.

That's a bit harsh. Can't be easy 'these days' running QF from a country as geographically out on a limb as Australia with the competition there is out there now.

I think the 'freedoms of the air' should have been torn up years ago !

Globally I would ban the carriage of any transfer traffic unless it is to a destination not served by the or a home carrier at the origin.

What's wrong with that ?

EK for example could still fly from all the British regional airports tranferring through DXB because there is no indigenous alternative from the UK. It just means they could only transfer traffic from LHR to destinations not served by BA or VS. Their services to to DXB (solely) would obviously be untouched.

It would just provide 'some' protection (I know that's a dirty word) for big international airlines at their main base.

Flying is like sex - I've never had all I wanted but occasionally I've had all I can stand.

and will probably be doing SYD-HKG runs for the rest of its life (as its not a real long haul flight which OQA will be less efficient on due to extra weight from repairs

Wow so an extra 200kg, means it is no longer suitable for long haul?
..and yes this is the added weight of the repairs, its not a guess....
Before QF signed off on the repairs, they were told what the expected weight of the repairs, and them through their performance calcs....
