Which US carrier flies to London??? Gatwick or Heathrow will do but please make a note on that. And which type of aircrafts do they use???

PhilB , you forgot to mention that Continental also uses the B757 on flights to LGW from Cleveland.

And TWA 767 - once daily during fall, twice daily during summer to St. Louis from LGW.

American also flies to Gatwick from Dallas/Ft.Worth as
well as Raleigh/Durham.

United flies to Heathrow from Chicago, Washington DC,
Newark, JFK, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Continental flies from Newark twice daily to Gatwick,
twice daily from Houston, and once daily from CLE.

US Airways flies twice daily from Philadelphia and one
a day from PIT and CLT.

TWA once daily from STL.

NW once daily from MSP and DTW.

Delta three times daily from ATL, once daily from
CVG, and next spring, once daily from BOS.

Continental has far and away the best service across
the Atlantic. American and United are also good. Delta
is average. US Airways is OK if you fly the A330 so I
have heard. The 767-200ER's are horrible.

Northwest is basic, stripped down, 1980's era style
flying with few frills and natty old planes.

I believe CO are starting EWR-STN with 752's soon. Either way a big new long haul client is being unvailed today by BAA (airport operator).

UAL also operates 763s from ORD to LHR.

ContinentalEWR should try Virgin for real service in all cabins

Sorry ContinentalEWR - I'm gonna have to agree with PhilB. Continental doesn't even have a true first class, so it can't compete with the International carriers like AF and BA that have beds in the front, etc. I've never flown Virgin, but I understand their economy class is the best out there.

Please tell me how Continental is so markedly different that the others in Economy Class transatlanic.

Also, when compared to foreign airlines, almost all US airlines are put to shame by them. IMHO, I think some of the best ways to cross the Atlantic in Economy Class are:

SQ to FRA / AMS from JFK / EWR
KU to LHR / FRA from JFK / ORD?
SR

Greater seat pitch, choice of films, entertainment, radio and computer games at every seat. Phone at every seat (not one between three).

As for the food, try this menu for size. It was served to me in economy (coach, for our transatlantic friends) on Virgin Atlantic on August 7 2000 en route LHR-SFO (VS019) and was also served on VS flights 017,023,041,043.

Tomato and red onion salad with basil pesto dressing

Soft white floured roll

Main Course

Choice of:

Traditional English roast (beef, yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes,carrots,broccoli and onion gravy)

Mild Chicken Korma (chicken pieces marinated and cooked in subtle Indian spices with coriander rice, spinach pakora and a coconut sauce)

Mediterranean Vegatable Spirella Pasta (topped with Pecorino and goat's cheese in a light tomato and basil sauce)

Dessert:

Lemon and Lime Muffin Slice

Cheese and Biscuits:

Sturminster Cheddar with Italian herb crackers

Wine:

Choice of Virgin's own Cuvee Chardonnay 1999 or their 1998 Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend

REFRESHMENTS

during the flight everyone was offered a vanilla ice cream coated with fruit sorbet and, at another time, a hot filled panini sandwich.

Prior to landing the following was served:

choice of:

Soft tortilla wrap filled with Greek salad

Tuna with spring onionon tomato bloomer bread.

followed by Carrot crumble cake with sultanas and a butter cream filling.

Tea and coffee

Drinks available throughout the flight free of charge:

Tea, coffee, cola, mineral water, Famous Grouse, Jack Daniels, Three Barrels Brandy, Courvoisier Cognac, Vodka, Gordons Gin, Bacardi, Martini extra dry, Southern Comfort, Baileys, Malibu, Tio Pepe, London Pride Beer, Fosters, Red Stripe, Orange/apple/tomato juices,Ginger ale, Sprite, Tonic water.

All served promptly, efficiently at the right temperatures.

The garbage collection was interesting- very few unfinished meals.

Yes I did say this was the economy selection. Premium Economy and Upper Class got steak as a choice of entree and also free champagne/bucks fizz but you could buy the bubbly in economy if you wanted to.

Over the years their service just gets better and better.

I flew USAirways in coach from Pittsburgh to Paris last year. It was a very enjoyable flight with great service and the seats were reasonably comfortable.. and it was on a 767-200ER. I guess everyone's entitled to their opinion but I was pleased with the plane and the service.
