First 2-Class Cabin CO Q400 In Service

Fri Dec 23, 2011 7:34 am

This past Weds saw the first reconfig'd Q400 fly EWR-IAD. But it isn't being promoted as such yet

per CO-"The aircraft has been reconfigured from 74 Economy class seats to 7 First class and 64 Economy seats. However, because this is the only Q400 that is reconfigured, all of our applications and systems will treat this flight as a single-cabin Economy aircraft"

I think a 2 cabin prop is some what of a novelty! I am unaware of too many others out there

Is F at the rear as per the original F/Y layouts of props?

The Q's board from the front. The F cabin will be located at the front of the cabin.

There was a prototype flying around the fleet since August of 2010. Didn't realize it took this long to fully roll out.

Wait.... wasn't one of the merger requirements "All hub-to-hub to be mainline" ? Or is EWR-IAD exempted from it due to proximity ?

Isn't that just Pre CO hub to hub for now. They will have to resolve CO to UA and vice versa hub to hub.

It's not a "merger" requirement. It's in the Pilot agreements for both airlines. However, because the agreements specify the hubs of the pre-merger entities, UA/CO Express can fly between "each others" hubs.

This is even better than business on an RJ or a narrowbody. Nobody beside you at all.

LH guarantees business class passengers within Europe that the seat next to them will be empty, including 4-abreast regional types like CRJs and Embraer 195s etc. On those types you have 2 seats to yourself in business class.

And on 6-abreast types the middle seat is unsold (as on almost all European carriers with a flexible business/economy cabin using Y class seats).

I'm not sure whether any carriers other than LH match their policy on 4-abreast types of only selling one of each pair of seats.

On LX Avro RJ100s (5-abreast, 2-3), the middle seat in the 3-seat section isn't sold but on the 2-seat side both seats are used. Always best to select a seat in the 3-seat section on LX Avros for that reason.

This is AWESOME and it would be great to see some photos of the interior.

I have reached out to United media, but with the holidays, I am not sure how that will go.

I have learned the aircraft is N323NG that has the first class.

Looks like it is flying from PIT to IAD tomorrow. There isn't a chance someone will be flying on it is there?

At least they deserve credit for attempting to offer this. I would think this will appease some of the frequent fliers.....in some of the markets, it is nice to see first class returning to several markets that had not seen it in years since the arrival of the 50 seat RJ.

Personally, I'd take fewer Q400 flights to serve an airport over multiple SAAB flights 90 minutes apart any day of the week.

Not yet, but the UA rep who posted the announcement last night on FlyerTalk said they'd add E+ to the Q400s "in the next few months".

What's the seat pitch on these new F seats?
At LH Regional the seat next to you is free in C, but the seatpitch doesn't change compared to Y... same seats!

Actually no, when US and BA were tied up, they offered an all F Dash 8 from DCA-JFK to connect with Concorde. I don't know how long it lasted.

Yes, currently there are express on ORD-CLE, ORD-EWR, IAD-EWR, IAH-IAD, IAH-DEN. All of that will most likely disappear with a new agreement.

Quoting CiC (Reply 19):

The First seats have 36" pitch, Y+ will have 33" I believe.

I always found that flight interesting, considering that it is presently bookended in the schedule by a pair of 216-seat 757-300s.

I suppose with all the ExpressJet ERJs operating out of DEN these days, there needs to be more ways to cycle aircraft through the system to maintenance bases.
