What Will Happen To BmiBaby?

Fri Dec 23, 2011 4:12 pm

Will BmiBaby remain as a separate entity or will it be absorbed into BA much like the BMI Mainline services?

If LH doesn't manage to sell WW before the completion of the deal with IAG, price would be significantly reduced. Someone mentioned that 4U might take WW and wind it down which I think is quite possible if no other airlines show interest for WW. However, since LH doesn't plan to earn much from this deal short-term anyway, I wonder if they think it's worth the extra hassle. In that case, they might leave it to IAG.

All those 737s are leased, they're not BMIbaby assets. That's exactly why no-one wants to buy the airline - it has nothing of intrinsic value.

I put my money on that WW will be bought by LS within a few years.

The decision over the future of BmiBaby has to be completed within the the next few months. Time is of the essence !

BmiBaby? err no.
I too favour LS purchasing as it will give them a BHX base which would be their next logicial geographic expansion whilst keeping fleet commonality at the same time.

I would agree, despite all of the aircraft being on lease they have a pool of licensed crews they can easily absorb while taking on the leases if they want to. If not there are plenty of still usefull 733s and 735s out there. LH have plans to retire thier 737 classics, they've got to go somewhere

Would be nice to see LS in BHX.

It has been determined that the WW business has negative value. Neither LH nor BA really want to be seen to be shutting down a business in the current econmic climate but will no doubt do so, if required.

LH will attempt to "sell" it, with LS seeming the only likely buyer. I use the word "sell" as LH will have to give it to LS with a dowry (they have admitted as much as by publicly saying that the BMI price to IAG/BA is reduced if WW is included - the reduction presumably equates to the cost of shutting WW down). So long as the dowry that goes with WW is less than the reduction in price paid by IAG then the deal works for LH.

Anybody thought about Vueling? They seem to be willing to expand and after TLS and AMS they could a UK base.

I would go with LS also, which would give them access into BHX as mentioned. This would also allow them a much larger presence at EMA.

I was going to suggest BE (who are part owned by IAG) but I can't see them being interested in taking on that.

I think BE would be more interested in BMI Regional which I do not think BA will want to keep either.

Maybe easyjet for BMIBaby?

Why would Easyjet bother? I can't see WW has anything Easyjet need (not slots nor aircraft). If Easyjet want to operate the WW routes they can simply start up those routes in competition. Why take on the staff issues and liabilities when you don't need to?

Ideally, IAG does not want to buy either business. Mr Walsh said “detailed” talks have taken place with interested parties in relation to BMI Regional and some “early discussions” in relation to BMI Baby.

I wonder what this means for my local airport EMA?

I have flown WW plenty of times and really like their product. It always feels slightly better than what Ryanair have on offer.

Will be a shame to see BMIbaby go

Same here, they offer great flight times to Scotland and Europe and a great service too. Not entirely sure who will take their place, LS are expanding at EMA but they seem more interested in the bucket and spade routes. U2 only just pulled out, and FR have a completely different type of destination. I guess we will find out in the next few months.

Highly doubt Jet2 will go for WW. BHX is not on their wishlist I wouldnt have thought.

Why not ? They dont seem to be "frightened" of anyone and I cant imagine Monarch at BHX are of particular concern. New bases up for consideration all the time if LPL, SEN as the latest are anything to go by.

Jet2 aint stupid. Even Ryanair are struggling at BHX. LPL would be a foolish move, and dont even get me started about SEN.

Unfortunately, BHX is in a horrible position of being within 100 miles of LHR, LTN, STN, EMA & STN. That kind of stuck in the middle situation can't be helping them attract new airlines.
I remember the golden days, when BHX was actually quite busy with BA, BE, FR, BY, UK, VB.

It's a shame it's gone this far, and I'm not sure BHX has the ability to be much more than it currently is.

Why go through all the bother of buying BMIbaby when, if you want to operate from those airports, you can simply stick your own aircraft there?

I agree they offered a better service than U2 in my experience. I can only see LS taking them on, so that would be interesting to see if LS stayed in BHD highly unlikely tho. Only other option is a new investor re branding into a new airline but in this climate and ageing aircraft that wont happen.
I think they will vanish, or a fast start for Stelios Fast jet! although ive just read he is basing his new airline in Africa. So yes I think sadly they will vanish.

MON? Now that's an unexpected something! If MON will buy WW I think most destinations will be cancelled because I can't see MON operating UK domestic and destinations like AMS and CDG actually.

If nobody buys WW can they survive in their own right? Might be odd to have a sub brand when the parent brand has dissapeared, but oporationally and financially could it survive?

I doubt if they could survive on their own. If nobody buys WW I think the airline will be shutdown within a few years.

Another name banded around a bit is Air Contractors. I don't think that's as far fetched as it sounds, remember Jet2 was founded on a cargo airline.

In that case it will be interesting to see if Air Contractors keeps the scheduled flights or that they will focus on charter operations only.
