A380s, 748s, and now 787s. May we expect a small order for A350s shortly?

If this is true, I'd expect the 787s to have GEnx engines to fit alongside the 747-8s. May as well have both under-performing versions to maintain commonality...

Congrats to both Transaero and Boeing.

I know that Transaero has ambitious plans, but for an airline that carried 6.5mn passengers last year (8mn expected this year), aren't they over-ambitious? Russia doesn't have the huge home market China / India / US have, nor the high income economy that Europe / Japan / US have, nor the transfer capabilities of Gulf carriers. So what's the catch? Will they really be so successful, or is another Kingfisher on the way?

They are also a charter airline, it's okay to order larger aircraft if they see demand.

Here in Croatia, their aircraft are the largest that visit our airports as regular charters (777 and 747 in PUY, 767 in SPU...). They often use part of the aircraft for charter arrangements and the other part as a regular flight AFAIK.

Plus, they have aircraft that need replacement, so I wouldn't call them over-ambitious at all.

Congrats to Transaero.

I'm just wondering if they are worrying about fleet commonality or anything. It would be fine for them to have 3 different plane types, but maybe like ten more of them?

Still, overall good news. They will have an interesting fleet.

The importance of fleet commonality may be exaggerated.

But still, four of each. And wouldn't they need spares for the 787s? (if they use them the right way)

Engines may be under power by the hour contracts. Doesn't Boeing offer maintenance under similar terms? Maybe they pool maintenance with other airlines. I think 777 and 787 pilots can be in the same pool with minimal extra training. Cabin crew can certainly be on multiple frames.

I agree it is surprising to see low numbers of multiple models but it must be remembered that commonality is just one of many parameters. In Transaero's case it seems the other parameters make up for it.

This is good news! I like the way Transaero is building their fleet. They come a long ways, from the days that they were using leased AA DC10-30s.

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/art...ransaero-to-take-four-787s-366371/

"Russian carrier Transaero is to acquire four 262-seat Boeing 787s under an agreement which continues its recent fleet-renewal programme.

The airline said it had signed an agreement with the US airframer to take the aircraft. It has not disclosed an engine selection.

Transaero said the twinjets would be configured with four first-class, 14 business-class and 244 economy-class seats.

Director general Olga Pleshakova said the airline was "sticking to a principle of innovation" with the decision.

She added that the carrier had already made advance payments to secure the 787s, which will be used to replace Boeing 767s used by the Moscow-based operator.

"This aircraft, which has become a symbol of emerging technology, has the highest efficiency," said Pleshakova.

Transaero has already tentatively signed for Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8 aircraft, and placed an order for eight Airbus A320neos."

That's interesting, thought the A380's were firm....

Gotta love their business technique. They kept buying all those shabby aircraft for as long as I can remember and of course everyone kept trashing them. And not all of a sudden they come out and buy all the latest and coolest planes. Wow!

Maybe they wanted to sign a bunch of MOUs for a potential fleet of under-powered a/c? Once done get the government to complete the deals so the country assumes ownership? Makes sense for Russian based company that doesn't buy the other underperforming engine (Trent 1000 version B, C, D and maybe we get it right with E) for the program.

If this is 767 replacement the job won't be done, they've got more than four of those. Perhaps a follow-on order will come later?

Actually an airport like DME is much better positioned as a transfer point between (SE Asia, Japan, Korea, india and China) and Europe than the any other Gulf airport. Same goes for SE Asia, India, pakistan to the North America.
The only thing that's lacking is just the political well in Russia.

I can see them given the like of EK et.al a run for their money.

That's most probably taken care of through Boeing's GoldCare program.

I don't think so, but:

Pretty sure of that. They could replace the 762's and oldest 763's now, and wait with a replacement order until their remaining 767's are too expensive to operate, or run our of cycles/flying hours.

For the record: I don't think Transaero will operate only 4 A380's and 748's either...

Not shortly, but as soon as they need replacing their 777's, there will be a good chance.

Yes, but a still rather small airline flying practically every type produced the last 20 years is a bit extreme - but eh as a spotter one can only like that.

It was a good job there were all those 787 cancellations in the past. It means Transaero will be able to get their 787s super fast, if they want.

Well done to all.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I think they chose GR because they are:
1. Reliable
2. Won't blow up on them, either on the test stand or in the air
3. Perhaps not have an engine die due to ice crystals

Reliability and all!!
