Pan Am's Douglas DC-3s In The Blue Ball Scheme

Tue Dec 27, 2011 12:46 am

I have seen some photos of some Pan Am's DC-3s and some DC-4s wearing their
Blue Ball paint scheme. I find it amazing they had those aircraft in their fleet long enough
to wear that newer paint scheme that came out in 1957. Did these planes carry passengers
or cargo at that time?

In their January 1958 timetable, all of Pan Am's internal German services to/from West Berlin were still using DC-4s. That would have required several aircraft (16 daily departures from THF)..

The only other passenger DC-4s I can find in that timetable operated NAN-AKL-NAN 3 x week and NAN-PPG-NAN (only once every two weeks), connecting at NAN with the B377 Stratocruiser service to/from SYD.

There were still many Pan Am DC-4 (C-54) all-cargo services then, mainly on transatlantic and Latin America/Caribbean routes, also a weekly SFO-HNL and twice-weekly SEA-FAI freighter.

The only DC-3s that appear in that 1958 timetable were operated by Pan Am's various Latin American affiliates in which PA had varying degrees of ownership, but I don't think those would have been in PA livery.

By 1963 the DC-4s were gone and all the Berlin flights (by then up to about 40 daily departures from THF) used the DC-6B which were replaced by the 727-100 about 3 or 4 years later.

I traveled to MIA in 1961, 1962, and 1963, and remember seeing both DC-3's and DC-4's in the meatball livery, and there are pictures of N19912 and N54705 on the net.

http://www.airlinefan.com/airline-ph...103939/Pan-Am/Douglas/DC-3/N19912/ - Date on the site claims picture is from 1966.

The postcard with N54705 says the picture was taken at IDL in 1959.

There are several pictures on the net including two on this website of Pan Am Meatball DC-4's taken at Templehof in Berlin. I believe the Miami operations were Cargo only during the time period I saw one in Miami but the aircraft could have been used for training.

FWIW I found two pics of Pan Am's DC-4's (C-54's) in the "blue ball" scheme in the archives on here...

Here's one fuzzy photo (old postcard). That aircraft, N54705, ex-C-47, was with Pan Am from 1946 to 1960.
