7 AA MD80's Parked At DFW's Old GA Ramp

Sun Jan 01, 2012 3:39 pm

I was out spotting yesterday at DFW and noticed 7 AA MD80's parked tight together on the old GA ramp next to the Bravo bridge. It would be odd to have that many birds for charters, and the west hangers had plenty of space for the weekend lull. Are these planes parked in preparation for their return to lessors?

Or they could be going to the dessert. AA keeps getting new 738s which are replacing the MD80s.

And, doesn't AA own all of their MD80s?

That's an A-net myth that has been busted, I think most are leased.

I would guess they we just parked for the day due to a reduced holiday flight schedule.

Errr...no. More a leased vs owned because AA went through a huge sale-lease back last year on many 738s and S80s to raise cash.

Quite possible. Delta North in Atlanta was a huge parking lot over the past few days because of the depressed flight schedule over x-mas and new years. Not only DL a/c but a bunch of CRJs over at the old city hanger (ASA A-Tech Center).

I want to say that the vast majority of the AA fleet is either leased or being used as collateral on loans after they've spent the last few years hemorrhaging cash.

Mmmmm, tasty MD-80 dessert.

In any case, those planes don't look to be set for any kind of long-term storage.

They're not. AA commonly uses this space for holiday storage. Today, the 80's are out and there is a 772 (I didn't catch the tail #, so I can't be sure it was an ER, but probably) over there.

This space is also used for Charter storage now that the E Satellite terminal is occupied with nightly RONs. But AA does frequently store just about every type in the inventory there when the need arises.

As for long term storage prep, I'm not 100% certain, but I've heard from more than a few folks that that is actually done up at TUL before they get sent off to ROW.

I thought all of AA's 777-200s were ERs.

I went on a fun trip to DFW yesterday just for fun to ride the train around and watch the airport move about. I too saw it except when I was there in the morning I saw 5, and I saw a 6th one getting towed to that area. My guess was what you have guessed. They're headed out for retirement.

EDIT** From reading others posts I guess not so quickly are these aircraft headed for the boneyard. However, it got my mind thinking that.

There is little AA hasn't used as collateral for loans. They loose money but build cash... the difference is borrowing prior to bankruptcy. We'll see mass MD-80 retirements; anyone else think they'll try to extend bankruptcy to significant 738/A319 deliveries?

Latest quarterly report had 338 (it had the operating lease portion withheld as proprietary information):

This was going by their year end report at 2010, so a year old. Sorry I don't have anything newer
