New SJCNRT; SJC To More Asia Routes?

Mon Jan 02, 2012 10:06 pm

With Narita service returning to SJC, could begin to see a trickle back into the Asian market where AA failed? I think being a former employee of Samsung in San Jose, I think KE or OZ would do GREAT in SJC. So would BR to TPE or even CX/CA to China work? I think the market is becoming ripe again and just enough traffic there. I understand with SFO so close, even LAX, carriers would defend those markets first. I think that SJC is a gem awaiting the use of its full potential. WN and AS are realizing that now.

Yes, being my former home town I agree. As others have pointed out, if you live in SJC it's far more convenient to fly out of there than the 35-40 mile drive up highway 101 to SFO, which may take much longer during peak traffic times. My sister just flew out of SFO and someone has to drive an 80+ mile round trip to drop them off vs. a quick 6 mile drive to SJC.

Having said that, with the thankful exception of NH, I doubt that in today's economic climate that very many international airlines could justify having two flights into airports 35 miles apart, as nice as that would be for South Bay residents.

I'd love to see more new international (and domestic) service to SJC, but other than maybe someone trying another route like SJC-LHR and maybe a resumption of a few Canadian cities and something like SJC-PVR or SJC-MEX, I'm not hopeful that will happen.

The 787 was made for an airport like SJC. Anything bigger would be testing the yields on any route. NH has no first class on their 787 and is/will receive subsidies for the next two to three years to stem losses.

KE/OZ would not venture into SJC with their operations out of SFO. Both carriers rely on their partners for connecting passengers.

CX/CA definitely not IMO. CX is WO and has taken The AA philosophy that the will fly to where AA is. SFO works for CX because of he large Chinese market and business ties. CA relies heavily on UA for connevting traffic, which SJC does not have.

BR/CI would be a possibility. I would say BR because they carry a lot of low yeild paxs on package deals through consolidators. The only thing that could help them is with the cargo from the tech industry. The only problem is that they fly mostly 777Ws across the Pacific and the plane is too much capacity for SJC.

On a last note, a lot of people are saying how convenient SJC is to the local area and the one hour or so drive to SFO is inconveient. I live in Beijing and one hour or so to the airport is the norm with the traffic and I am still in the same City as the airport. All major cities around the World take time to get to the City center from their perspective airports. I assure you that most people here do not know where San Jose is and San Francisco is the known City in N. California. This is the same mentality airlines use. Look at NH asking SJC to put Silicon Valley in their title for name recognician.

Don't get your hopes up. The City of San Jose is paying a pretty penny to get NH at SJC in the first place. Don't get me wrong...SJC is a great market. But like OAK, SJC is definitely in the shadow of SFO.
