Runway At Taoyuan Airport Slated To Re-open

Tue Jan 03, 2012 6:32 am

According to a local newspaper, the northern runway at TPE is scheduled to be reopened next week. It was closed for three months for strengthening.

The southern runway will be closed (likely after Chinese New Year) for rebuilding. Once the southern runway is rebuilt, the northern runway will be closed for rebuilding as well -- now why they didn't just rebuild the first one from the beginning I have no idea.

The article says that this was a "preliminary rehabilitation" of the northern runway and that it ran a month longer than scheduled. I would imagine that if they had tried to do the entire rebuild, it wouldn't have been done in time for the peak travel that will happen in January, a combination of Taiwan's presidential elections and (a relatively early) Chinese New Year.

Perhaps the northern runway was in such poor shape that starting with the southern runway after CNY and waiting until after that was finished to do the northern runway, just wasn't an option?

It's possible Chris ...

I guess that by the time the government finally allocated the funds, there simply wasn't time to do a complete rebuild before the rush season, so they had to do a preliminary upgrade, with a complete rebuild later (which undoubtedly costs more).

From what I've read, the southern runway has been disintegrating badly with it being the sole runway available and has required frequent patching.

Eitherway, this is long overdue -- both runways are well past their design life and urgently in need of replacing.

Doesn't help that the original contractor went bust in the middle of the refurb either!

runway 05R/23L is in pretty bad shape. Rolling down that runway is a teeth jittering experience, especially in a lighter aircraft where everything rattles around anyway. It really does need a lot of work, as do some of the taxiways.
