Rumor: SOC For WN/FL To Occur March 2nd, 2012

Tue Jan 03, 2012 6:25 pm

Hey All--

I was on wiki, so I know not always true, but was on Air Tran's wiki and it mentioned that SOC was planned for March 2nd, 2012.

Can anyone from Southwest or Air Tran confirm SOC will in fact occur March 2nd, 2012 as mentioned on wiki?

Now to make sure I am clear on this...SOC just means WN/FL is now Southwest, but what does this to do ATC Call Signs, Stickers on FL birds, etc etc?

Will this be when Code-Sharing occurs as well?

I was wondering if SOC for an acquisition is different from a merger? When SOC occurred for AA/TWA, BOTH booking and the LLC/Call Sign for TWA ended Nov 30th/Dec 1st, 2001.

I haven't seen a definite date mentioned, but there was a recent article in Business Finance Magazine.

Q&A with Southwest Airlines CFO Laura Wright

Quote:
BF: How is the ongoing integration of Southwest and AirTran affecting SWA financially from a cost perspective and operationally?
LW: Overall, integration is going extremely well. But integration at this scale impacts every piece of our organization. From an operations side, we actually can't begin integrating or operating as one until we get a Single Operating Certificate from the FAA. It is currently on-schedule for early March.

That would certainly line up with what I read on wiki!

Thanks for the article!

So just under 2 full months left of Air Tran operations if we're lead to believe it is indeed early march. Better get your Air Tran flying in if anyone wants to catch them!

I assume any station changes would occur when the open a new booking window like they did with DFW? I am scheduled on FL on March 3 FNT-ATL-SRQ and March 11 TPA-FNT. I am really hoping the SOC occurs after that so they don't route me away from SRQ.

The next stations to close will be...
AVL
MLI
ACY

This will occur January 8th when WN's next schedule extension takes place.

PHF is somewhere in the March Schedule I believe...

The next round of FL closures will be on the NEXT WN's schedule extension being June 3rd, 2012...
BMI
IAD
MIA
CRW
TYS

SRQ will not happen until at least August of 2012 when the next schedule extension will be published (unless barring a sudden closure of multiple FL cities.)

So you don't have to worry about SOC affecting your trip at that date, and it does seem to be March 2nd for now, which means you're flying "Southwest" on this trip in terms of SOC...

Anyone hear anything about WN's plans for BKG after the SOC?

Oh Ya, back in Feb of 2011, WN/FL announced new non stop service to BKG to HOU, MDW and BWI.

Combined WN/FL will be flying to ATL, HOU, MDW, BWI and MCO.

I'd say the future/plans are solid for now at BKG for WN/FL!

*Note: Not all N/S are daily, most are weekly and some include Saturday Only Service. Schedule is from Jan to March 2012.

Will the baggage fees (on the FL flights) FINALLY go away for good after that?

One item (and yes, I'm aware that it's off-topic) that hasn't been discussed in these merger threads has been, what will become of the AirTran VISA cards and accounts from Barclays Bank?

WN's VISA cards are handled by Chase Bank and have an annual fee of $35 whereas the FL/Barclays card has no such fee. If Chase Bank would 86 their annual fee PERIOD (no first year free then next year fee); then I would have no qualms about switching over. Otherwise, I would prefer to either stay w/Barclays even if it's divorced from FL or move to another bank card that has no annual fee.

It means SWA and "Southwest" for ATC/callsigns, with TRS and "Citrus" going away. One operating certificate, one callsign.

SWA may still choose to have Air Tran as a seperate brand for as long as they like, however, and judging by the lack of any repainted FL jets, it seems like it could be awhile. I assume it'd just be Air Tran operated by Southwest, as far as legalities go.

I'm hoping that A+Rewards and Rapid Rewards are merged before May. I have two credits at FL and hope they transfer over before I gotta cough up $80 to extend them for a year. RR's don't expire....

FL Policies Slowly Transitioning To WN's Policy's (by atrude777 Jan 3 2012 in Civil Aviation)

Back in November Air Tran had pulled all advertising for the A+ Rewards Visa Program with Barclay and would NOT be recruiting new members/customers for it.

Marketing Signs, Posters and advertisements around the airports would be pulled down and completed by end of 2011.

Last I heard people with the Barclay card will continue to earn A+ rewards through the CC usage and at some point in time the A+ Account from Barclay will transition over to Southwest Airlines's Account.

As for the annual fee, I think it's 69 dollars, not 35? The old WN Card was much lower, but now they have put out a new SWA CC Program, the annual fee is now 69, and 99 for the Visa Signature.

It sounds like they simply will just merge the accounts, and the annual fee will continue or increase I suppose in your situation.

I am on the SWA Visa Signature and paying the 99 annual fee so I haven't investigated enough about it.

I am more curious about FL Customers who have points that may expire at some point in the Spring of 2012 and may hope/need info on when WN plans to acquire said points so they don't expire. It would be nice for WN to put out a timeline so Customers have an idea of what to do with their points and Credit Card, especially in terms of making financial decisions like these.

Not quite. Conversion won't start on the 737's until February with 2 lines of maintenance. The 717 won't start until January 2013 with 3 lines of mx. The SOC may be received the first quarter of this year but 766UA is correct, they will still be operated as a separate carrier until all a/c and flight crew have transitioned.

Not so fast. This was put in place with FL, while after the announcement, but WN didn't quite have a hold of things. Most will agree this was an attempt for BKG to solidify their future with WN. All of the routes are paid for and I've heard loads are laughable ( as they should be with NO connections to the WN network ). Nothing is solid about anything at BKG.

I can't speak for loads, OR yields (as this is the deciding factor of a profitable route), but I am betting WN is holding out until the code share gets put into place.

Once this happens, then WN can evaluate to see how well Branson is doing load wise since the routes are paid for as mentioned.

This is consistent with my observations, too. I would say nothing is solid about the future of WN and BKG. I've booked our family on F9 BKG-DEN-GEG in March, and the loads on the BKG-DEN and DEN-BKG legs are pretty much my family plus maybe a few others so far. Not very stout, to say the least, and that's on flights feeding directly into F9's DEN network. I would like to see BKG succeed as a compliment to SGF, but I would say nothing is solid at all about BKG in its current business model.

If that were indeed the case; I should've received something in the mail from Barclays regarding the change. No word as of yet, not even mentioned in my last billing statement.

Since my current Barclays-AirTran VISA card has NO annual fee; a more likely scenario might be that Barclays gives its current cardholders the option to either stay with them (but have no airline-related perks or benefits) or opt for the Southwest Chase card with its annual fees. It is my understanding that NEITHER Barclays and Chase Bank are merging.

Will Southwest have any heritage planes post merger? Say an Air Tran colored plane, or a plane with the Valujet critter on the front? Seems like its a part of the heritage, and they may want to preserve it the way US has with their planes.

Worse then the 39 dollar yes, but still overall cheaper compared to most average Airline Credit Cards which seems to range from 85-150 dollars a year--YIKES

To make sure we are not misunderstanding, I am not saying they will merge (ala Airline Merge) I had meant, that they would take the Credits you have from Air Tran earned from CC, and turn them into WN Points, it seems the ratio was 1 Credit had equaled 1,200 points. Not confirmed, no idea just what I have seen.

Then Chase would probably extend their offer to existing members with the option to cancel or do whatever they want.

This is getting way off topic though..this should be a new topic though so we can discuss it further...this has nothing to do with SOC.

Considering that Valu Jet livery was connected with the crash in the everglades and that's what the flying public will think of and remember I'd be very shocked if WN puts a valu jet livery on a plane.

You might see a plane named after Bob Fornaro, like WN did for June Morris when they merged with Morris Air. That's probably about it. They didn't do one for Morris so I doubt they would for FL.

The 3 Retro Schemes WN has is enough for them--I'd hope they'd keep Air Tran's Sports liveries if the agreement continues.

Even though it would be somewhat short-lived; I, for one, would love (or LUV) to see a 717 in that retro scheme.

If they do, would they keep the schemes on the 717s until they (WN) unload them? If so, WN could simply replace the AirTran fuselage titles with Southwest titles; and that what be it for exterior changes.

Alex,

BTW, I set up a separate thread in the Non-Av. for any discussion regarding the WN/FL merger impacts to FL Barclays VISA card holders:

When will Southwest start codesharing with AirTran? Are they waiting for the SOC, or is that totally unrelated to codesharing?
