Was this part of Americn Airlines or a seperate Airline owned by American?
As far as I know AOA was a separate airline with its own operating permit but owned by AA
purchased American Export Airlines from shipping company American Export Lines in 1945 and changed their name to American Overseas Airlines.
There wasn't enough room in those days for 3 U.S. carriers on transatlantic routes so AA
sold AOA to Pan Am in 1950. AA
's long-time CEO C.R. Smith once said that, in hindsight, selling AOA was the biggest mistake he ever made.
