American Airlines To Europe,not The 1st Time

Ok When American Airlines started adding flights to Europe in the 1980s it was not their
first time. In the 1940s to Early 1950s American Airlines did serve Europe with American Overseas
Airlines until sold to Pan Am. Was this part of Americn Airlines or a seperate Airline owned by American?

As far as I know AOA was a separate airline with its own operating permit but owned by AA. AA purchased American Export Airlines from shipping company American Export Lines in 1945 and changed their name to American Overseas Airlines.

There wasn't enough room in those days for 3 U.S. carriers on transatlantic routes so AA sold AOA to Pan Am in 1950. AA's long-time CEO C.R. Smith once said that, in hindsight, selling AOA was the biggest mistake he ever made.

You remember it originally had nothing to do with American, when it started flying VS-44s transatlantic circa 1942. Changed the name from American Export to American Overseas after American bought control (?) in 1945. Might be semantics, but I'm guessing it was never "part" of AA.

I certainly was, check the CR Smioth Museum timeline of AA's history, it goes through this whole process.

Speaking of the C.R. Smith museum... many years ago they had an exhibit on AOA including a copy of the check from Pan Am.
