United 777 Wing Strike At LHR 1/3

Thu Jan 05, 2012 2:39 am

I just got back from LHR tonight was talking with a United Flight Attendant. He said that the winds at LHR was so bad yesterday that one of their birds, a 777, had a wing strike on landing at LHR. I searched the Aviation Herald and here but couldn't see anything about a wing strike. So does anyone have any info about the incident? Thanks!

judging by the subject and the fact that this is airliners.net combined with the fact that this is only the fourth post on a heavily viewed thread, I would like to assume that this did not happen.

Since we usually hear about occurences such as when a baggage cart 'nudges' an aircraft, i would be surprised if this did happen based upon the lack of news.

I may be wrong.........

As a CO.....damn.......I mean UA mechanic I would have heard about it. Plus it would have been listed on our out of service page in UA's Tech Op's portal.
Is it broke...? Yeah I'll fix it.

Ok, do I have to be the first to say it. Your listening to a Flight Attendant?

Second, a wing of a 777 making ground contact on landing. Doubtful. That's a very tall wing and if your banking that far for wind correction then you shouldn't be landing. Were not talking about an MD80 here.

Hello, just flew back from LHR on Wednesday and the winds on Tuesday were almost hurricane like and just found out the winds were just as severe on Thursday too. Luckily my flight back was smooooooth.

Doubtful? Maybe. Absolutely impossible? No. With such winds, when you are very close to the ground, all bets are off if there is a sudden draft or windshear.

I was around on Wednesday and only a Local Stand-by for all arrivals on both runways from 0600 - 1400 no other incidents reported.

On Thursday I was an early shift, only 1 Emergency which was on a BA flight.

The only other thing was a BA Airbus had to execute 2 go-arounds due cross winds and then diverted to Luton.
