Lion/Southwest 737 Orders: Which Most Impressive?

Fri Jan 06, 2012 1:56 am

Late last year Boeing won huge orders from Lion and Southwest. First was Lion if I'm not mistaken, the the "record breaker" from Southwest. But it seems like Lion could be way more significant if I read Boeings news releases. Can some one break down the differences and significance of both? Please?

Also, while also hitting the 7000 mark, there were many other orders like AA and many left to go to UA. What is the grand total of 737's of all types Boeing is due to deliver?

Well look at it this way. SWA have an ageing? fleet of 737-300 and -500 which need to get replaced, and Lion sorta came from no where, yet we dont know how they can sustain 200+ aircraft over the next 10+ years.

Interesting times for sure. Is the bubble going to burst?

The most interesting one is the one that actually buys all the planes ordered and pays for them in cash. My money is on WN by that criteria.

Lion is evidently planning yet another major order, so...

2365 as of the end of 2011.

And not to forget that Lion Air does not have an order for the MAX. It still only has the status as a commitment, at least officially.
Only WN has a firm order for the MAX. So that makes it quite obvious who's most impressive.

Thanks, This helps as I recal 2 headlines in the media:

"Boeing receives an order for 380 737's from Indonesia's Lion Air, the largest aircraft order ever"

Then weeks later...

"Boeing receives 150 orders for 737's from Southwest, the largest single order in aviation history"

I know the difference between firm orders and options, but the way it was reported didn't make sense. Which is why I was curious which was the "Guiness Book" order!

In this particular case I "assume" the media doesn't do much spin as the info must come from company press releases.

How does 2365 on order stack up against the A320 (series)orders for 2011?

Actualy, WN doesn't do 100% of its buying cash. This recent order of 738max includes leasing from what I've read

This allows them to contract the fleet some cheaper than selling extra frames. Also likely as important as WN is to Boeing, they likely couldn't secure enough slots on thier own, and have to use some that Boeing reserved for longtime leasing customers.

The SWA order is the more significant one by far. By once again getting in on the program early, they'll probably - and sadly - make sure the MAX is dumbed down the level of a NG (which, in turn, SWA had dumbed down to nearly a Classic). Clever work by SWA, having once again defined the next generation 737 to fit their very particular preferences, probably less good for everybody else thinking of buying one.

The leasing company then pays Boeing the cash and takes title while leasing the aircraft to WN. Whether Boeing collects from the sale to the airline directly (even if borrowed) or from the leasing company meets my criteria. My broader point is that there are a lot of commitments and orders out there, I wonder how solid all of them actually are so I tend to value the ones that are most likely to be completed the highest.

Lion Air by far, because I still wonder how on earth do they get the money for all these brandnew aircraft.

Airbus' site currently shows 3,348 narrowbodies on order.
