Information On Airtran AC #553 After WN Conversion?

Fri Jan 06, 2012 4:10 am

Does anyone have info on this aircraft. Supposedly it has went thru the WN conversion with all business class seats removed as well as coach seats. The second lav in the rear has been removed. Has anyone seen this AC sitting parked anywhere and perhaps has photos. If you do please post if you can. If you have info on this ac or any in this grouping Airtran 553, 554 and 555. Thanks.

I have worked on aircraft 555. I believe 552, 553 and 554 are our transitional Virgin Blue planes. 555 has full Southwest interior with some minor differences. Sidewall panels are a blueish gray, there are raft compartments in the ceiling and a changing table in the aft lav. Southwest planes only have changing tables in front lav. Also the jumpseats are cloth. We walked on the plane and knew it wasn't one of our originals then looked at the tail number and our pilots told us it was an Airtran plane that we took delivery of.

Not sure if we're talking about the same planes, but WN did get 3 planes that were slotted to be delivered to FL. Those slots were simply transferred to WN. These were part of the aquisition and would've been Southwest's whether the WN/FL deal went through or not. The 3 planes never ever flew for FL... they came out of the factory all WN.

553 and 554 came from Virgin Blue and have a transverse galley (G4B Galley) in the rear as well as two lavs forward of the galley and one in the front. 555 was transferred to WN but still has some minor differences than planes that weren't transferred, even in the flight deck.

A/C 555 and 556WN are 737-7BD models that were built for airTran and delivered to WN. I believe they entered service sometime in the 2nd half of 2011.. I have walked aboard 555 myself when she was brand new, the window paneling has thin light blue lines, shells where the life rafts were supposed to go, and even has a VHF antennae ( INOP ). These planes were supposed to enter service with WN with 3 lavs, but were converted to the regular WN layout before delivery. If you ever look on the FO side on 555 and 556 you will notice the first two windows with no grey outlines is where the fwd closet was supposed to go.

Side note:

A/C 550+551WN were from Air Sahara

A/C 552+553+554 were from Virgin Blue and are the ones currently going through mods to be converted into the standard WN interior.

I'm confused. All FL 737's have tail numbers from 300 to 399. Our 717's have tail numbers from 700 to 799.

Yes but when WN took delivery of these aircraft they were re-numbered N555 and N556. Because WN has a numbering system that most of us know, we also know that when we board an N5XX tail number and it's NOT a 737-500 that the aircraft came from somewhere else.
