Curacao Downgraded To Category 2

Curacao has been downgraded to category 2 by faa safety audit.

Since curacao has been downgraded by the faa the question would be what effect does it have on the former islands from the Netherlands Antilles.

The setup of the new Civil Aviation Authority from Curacao is also the Civil Aviation Authority for Sint Maarten. The other islands Bonaire, Saba and Statia depend on air service from the other two islands and are to follow directions of the Dutch Civil Aviation Auhtority.

The article mentions the following consequences:
- Curacao-based airlines may not start new routes to the US (it doesn't say what this means for all currently exsiting routes).
- Charter flights by Curacao-based airlines to the US are not allowed.

I think Dutch Antilles Airlines (DAE) will not be able to start service to MIA or FLL as originally planned. I think Insel Air is still allowed to fly (although I think they're based out of Aruba).

Interesting development, quite possibly to Insel's benefit right now. They are from Curacao, so expansion of routes to the US is out for now if all this is true (would be considered bad of course).
But, they have been dissing DAE at every possible opportunuity, with lawsuits, injunctions, etc., against the government and so on. I have no idea if the case has any merit, but if the FAA won't let any new operations in to the US, then DAE is likely on hold anyway! (Likley not a bad thing for Insel!).

IF you check out the link to faa it shows all countries and there current IASA category standard.

DAE and insel and any airline with an AOC from Curacao and Sint Maarten are category 2.

airlines with AOC in cat 2 country not able to perform schedule or charter service to US or change type of aircraft and frequency on any route.

All codeshare between Inselair and USairways canceled due to CAT2 downgrade but where canceled in oct 2011 by USairways due to FAA recomendation

there is also now issue with service between the former islands of the Netherlands Antilles that are now part of the Netherlands the special administrative islands of Bonaire, Statia and Saba. as they are now under Dutch Civil Aviation Authority this could restrict service between the islands themselves.

Also all new service to other islands and countries are in jeopardy due to category 2 status

Inselair has been working on a plan B for a while now the carrier is in the final stages of setting up local operation in Aruba. inselair Aruba.

i guess this project will now take the fast track so inselair can expand to other markets due to the downgrade of Curacao.

but there are more competition in aruba then curacao

every major us carrier to the US from Aruba

locally
Tiara Air operating
flyaruba in aoc stage
aruba airlines restarting operation soon has aoc


so in aruba there will be 4 airlines operating if all complete the process a heavily contested island market

The US codeshare on WM (Winair) was suspended yesterday, I guess this is why

How is that? As far as I know the Dutch Aviation Authorities do not make it a habit to copy these category downgrades from the US

It is a shame really. Since the Netherlands Antilles split up on 10-10-2010 Curacao is slipping backwards, all because of the goverment that is in place there at the moment. But that is another story.

This is interesting... so The Philippines, Indonesia and Israel are all Category 2 countries in the attached *.xls document. If I'm not mistakened Philippine Airlines and El Al still fly to the United States. Is there some kind of exemption process that the dutch Antilles airlines can apply for?

When a country is downgraded, airlines from that country that are already flying to the US can continue flying the routes they were before the downgrade. That is why Philippine Airlines and El Al still fly here. They cannot, however, add additional services on their own metal (or drop their current service and decide later to resume it); if they want to expand they need to wet lease an aircraft from a US carrier or an approved carrier from a category 1 country.

Wow, this is extremely disappointing, especially considering how the St. Maarten and Curacao governments fought for this break up just to end up going backwards. Is it just because Curacao was downgraded, St. Maarten was downgraded too? Winair is already in deep trouble, and this would have an even greater effect.

I'm not sure but seeing that Dutch Antilles Express is planning on using the wet-leased MD80 from Falcon Air which is an American-registered aircraft/airline, they might still be able to fly to the U.S.(?)

How is this so? Can you explain this further? Also, I see you explained it well with our local airlines still being able to fly to the U.S. with aircraft of airlines registered in CAT 1 countries so Dutch Antilles Express is still able to fly to the U.S. with the wet-leased MD80 from Falcon Air.

They can always get back to category 1 if the FAA feels the aviation authority complies with the recommendations from the FAA to return to meeting ICAO requirements. The reason is typically because of lack of oversight of the airlines safety within their jurisdiction. Mexico was downgraded to Category 2 for a brief period of time which caused quite a problem because it eliminated all the codesharing between US carriers and Mexican carriers. Mexico is now back to Category 1.

I don't get this part because LY is constantly adding services to/from JFK & EWR for holidays and different seasons.
