AF Bringing A380 To LAX In Summer 2012

Sun Jan 08, 2012 9:32 pm

I may have missed the announcement but looks like AF65/66 will be operated with A380 starting Summer 2012.
Another 380 operator at LAX!!!

Yup, starting May, the first daily flight will be from TBIT, while all the rest would be from terminal 2.

It seems that LAX is shaping up to become a major 380 port. Korean and Qantas now fly 380s to LAX. Which other airlines are, or are planning, using the 380 at LAX? And will LAX have enough 380 gates?

SQ uses the A380 to LAX. SQ and AF 380s will be at the gates in LAX around the same time.

yeap

Korean, Qantas, Singapore, Air France

My guess, Lufthansa and China Southern will announce LAX as a A380 destination before the year is over.

Does this mean that it is now possible to go around the world on the A380?

Interesting tidbit... Yes it does imply one could (with probably poor connection times). It also implies that there will be further opportunities available in a year or two.

I'd bet on China Southern. Lufthansa? Probably later.

Is China Southern doing very well to LAX right now as it is? I never got an answer last time I opened a thread on the topic. 777-200 to A380 seems like a big capacity jump.

China Southern operates the A330 to CDG and they're upgrading that route to A380...

Well, they can basically park an A380 at every remote gate. QF can park at least one at T4. They can park at the ends of Bradley. I believe at least 1 T2 gate is A380 capable.

I believe the withdrawal of the airline's A380 from YUL in Summer 2012 coincides with introduction of LAX with A380. Is it that AF are redeploying the same a/c?

They would have to find an extra half aircraft somewhere. While Europe-California is doable with one aircraft, it generally isn't practical.

I seriously doubt CZ. First they have not participated in any A380 project meetings, plus also see my comments below.

Just looking at the loads, CZ has never done to well across the Pacific. For the first 11-mos of 2011, its LAX LF % was mere 54.6%.
For the longest time also it was not even able to maintain daily service. Not very insperational ha.

Only 6-7 of the remotes are A380 capable. Has lots more than simple space, there are issues with location of fuel pits for example.

Also T-2 has no A380 current capable gates (there is a project in design if its gets funded sometime in the future) while T-4 has not been stripped nor do have I seen AA carry through on any of the facility adjustments. (remember QF made LAX terminal adjustments late 2008 in conjuction with launch of A380 services).

They are not withdrawing the A380 from YUL, but will use it 3 or 4 times a week. The other thread about this had its title corrected.

I thought at least 1 gate at T2 was made capable in anticipation of the much delayed introduction of the A380 by VS. Also, AF will have to figure something out if they want to maintain continuity.

Also, I definitely recall at least 1 gate at T4 was made A380-capable from a size standpoint. I take it this is a striping issue.

Nope. No T-2 gate at the moment. As mentioned in Reply 1, AF will be operating from TBIT for this Paris turn.

AF will get 2 additional A380s in april and may, will restart NRT, add LAX, and up IAD to daily.

AF's A380s will serve JNB (2 airframes required to operate daily), YUL, LAX, IAD and NRT (more than 1 airframe required to operate daily). That's 6 destinations with just 8 airframes in the fleet.

That explains why YUL is downgraded to only 4 weekly flights a week for next summer, and also why they are not resuming SFO this year. Once AF get more A380's in the system, they will bring all these flights to daily.

I am bummed that LAX will get the A380 for the summer and that my airport SFO will not this year as last. What is it gonna take me to fly on the A380. The last two years I have flown AF to BEY connecting in CDG. In 2010 I flew their A340 and last year the B777-300 out of JFK. I was planning this year to time my vacation when the A380 is deployed on CDG-SFO route for the summer, but I guess that won't happen as another thread shows that AF will switch to twice B777. At least better than their B744 which do not have private TV on each seat.

Sure, but they so far have chosen for the full TBIT experience.

Anyhow Skyteam has its large joint lounge there, so in many ways its an improvement over the AF T-2 stuff imo.

So what will happen is the AF PPT flights and the 777 CDG turn will op at T-2 along with KLM, while the A380 CDG turn will be from TBIT.

The new TBIT expansion will have lots of A380 capable gates. One will be opened far before the rest of the building (in 5 or 6 months I think), and the rest of those on the west side will open around the end of 2012. About 1 year later (after the old TBIT gates are torn down) the east side of the new TBIT will also have some 380 size gates.

I had lunch at the Encounter today and there seemed to be a parade of A380's. One taxied by me as I boarded at AKL 12 hours before. They are following me!

If you're a true aviation fan,of course it is. Even if you're not, 9 hours is more than enough time to hit a local bar in downtown FRA and have a few pints with the Fräuleins !
