First A380 Lands In Sri Lanka

Mon Jan 09, 2012 11:53 am

Making local aviation history, the an A380 touched down in Sri Lanka for the first time today (9th Jan). The unscheduled visitor was A6-EDN of EK, operating EK414/8JAN on AKL-SYD-DXB. Apparently the aircraft had to re-fuel and seems to have selected SIN first, but then switched to CMB - probably because CMB is right under the SYD-CMB track and provides the shortest delay. ETD SYD 2145L, actual 2320L. ETA CMB 0235L and actual 0433L. ETD CMB 0540L and actual 0526L.

That should definitely be an unexpected surprise to all the airport and ground duty people out there in CMB.
Could see the number of people surrounding the nose gear

Great pics!

I wonder though, why did it have to stop for fuel? Didnt they get enough fuel at SYD to make the trip to DXB?
Please let me know... If you know this is the end of the world, Let me know... If you know the truth...

That will have been a nice surprise for those working at Colombo airport at the time.
Turns out that while in Sydney on the outbound flight, the same A380 had a runway incursion.

It is a question for me too.

A6-EDN appears to have been flying on EK413/4 for the past few days. http://data.flight24.com/airplanes/a6-edn/

Did they have a tow bar for it in CMB, or was there a 'fly-away' tow bar in the hold?

CMB is an official A380 emergency alternative for EK, so I suppose that they already have the compatible equipment.

Due to over 1000 lightning strikes around the SYD area, the airport was on a ground stop. They took just enough fuel to get them to SIN & get out of SYD before curfew. Decided to go CMB instead midflight.

Also being discussed here re: SYD curfew

Would have been interesting landing that thing on the narrow runway at CMB!

Wow, looking at these photo's I just can't believe how HUGE the A380 is! You really don't appreciate the scale of the thing from the window at the gate.
