LHR Thread

Mon Jan 16, 2012 11:17 am

Thought it was about time this was resurrected.

So, what's been going on at LHR with all it's airlines and terminals.

The new terminal is coming along nicely, with windows now going in.

G-RAES returned to LHR after a total refit inside with British Airways New First, World Travellet Plus and World Taveller Cabins, as well as the new THALES IFE which is on the 777-300 aircraft and will be the norm for all new delivers.

QF have a issue as the late night LHR SIN for the past few days has been scheduled to depart the next morning (due to a tech issue)

China Airlines are suspending their LHR flight from march (currently sending a A340-300)

LHR went down to 1 runway for some reason for a little bit yesterday. Plane Finder showed takeoff and landings on the same runway for a little bit, any idea what happened?

What is the deal with the night curfew at LHR. My understanding was that flights are only allowed to depart after 23.29 in extreme circumstances (usually weather). CX253/254 landed and departed after the curfew last night, arriving at around 23.45 and departing two hours later.

Planes can land and take off after curfew, permission has to be obtained and airlines can only do it a certain number of imes a year I believe. CX have not had a delay this bad ex LHR in a while.

Noticed that last Tuesday, was quite impressed at how it has come on since I was last in LHR back in July. I was also surprised at how early the gate opened for my EI flight back to DUB. The flight was at 2045 & the gate was due to open at 2000, opened at 1925 instead. Slightly disappointed at how quiet LHR was when I was departing too, only ourselves a KM airbus & a CX A340 in a mini que for departure. Reason why I flew to LHR over LGW was to be in a 10-15 minute wait behind a few heavies

Saw the Air China special logo jet land 2 days ago. Wondered who the hell it was, such a difference to their normal colours.

Bit overcast today here at EGLL. Winds 220 at 9knots 8 degrees and visibility is about 2900 meters so LHR is under IFR at the moment.

Speaking of A340s, does anyone know what flights IB have the A340 on? It never seems to be the same flight two days running according to www.lhr-lgw.co.uk

The last airfield overview photo I saw was from October. It showed the roof as nearly complete (I think it was complete by the time I last saw it in late November) and the frame work going up for the central part of T2B. Also, the airside road tunnel was clearly visible in the mess of construction.

27L departures are disappearing within seconds of take off into the low cloud base.

Extra Heathrow terminal for Games

Heathrow is opening a temporary Games Terminal for athletes as part of its strategy to cope with increased passenger numbers during the Olympics.

Main part of the building is already up near the BA world cargo buildings.

Interesting point regarding every airport in the south east being temporarily taken over by 'the government'.

I can only imagine that they won't be able to do that with any kind of efficiency.

It does not say that the government will temporarily take over the operation of any airport. It does say that the government has laid down revised rules about what aircraft can land at which airports in the southeast during the Olympics.

As far as LHR is concerned all non-scheduled flights - including those operated exclusively for heads of states - will be directed to land at other airports. So if you are an exotic or biz jet fan, don't go to LHR during the Olympics.

No Planes will board there, customers will be bussed to aircraft. The terminals on arrival and depaurture days just won't cope with the amount of specialist baggage going thru.

Just an LHR update a rare chance (for me anyway) to see a Monarch (i believe an A321) here at Heathrow. She departed around 1030am. Possibly a weather related diversion? Surprising to end up at heathrow though.

The NZ All blacks 77W was also back today and landed about the same time as the Monarch departing. What a great sight.

Ah, a little late I see! 30 min or so. Did they say why?

Yes it was a tech problem with the windscreen of the plane. A sensor was broken, which is responsible to heat the window during the flight. Departed 55min late and arrived around 40min late at LHR. At least I got a great gate just next to immigration and I was out in 20min and on the tube with checked luggage. So still not too bad in the end. However with seven flights to LHR (always ZRH-LHR-ZRH) in the last six months all but one arrived late due to various problems. Just seems to be my luck with LHR flights (BA or LX). Guess being on the last flight of the day out of ZRH does have more risks of being delayed. Next week is my next flight to LHR on LX. Keeping fingers crossed that it will be on time for a change. Funny thing is that all my LHR departures were on time, except once. Usually it is the other way around

It was operating a corporate charter to Scotland carrying employees for a company conference. I believe there were similar flights from LGW and BHX also today.

With regards to the Telegraph article about the capacity reduction at LHR....all I'll say is what a sepctacular piece of mis reporting!...LHR will still have the same number of flights as last year...runway capacity will be reduced for the period during the Olympics after the IATA slot retun deadline on 31st January so that there has to be somewhere in the region of about 8 cancellations in any single hour before General Aviation even get a sniff of a slot! That's what is really meant by a temporary capacity reduction to protect business as usual!

Just heard from a friend Bagel street currently airside in T5 near the domestic ages, and Landside in T3 will both be gone by the end of March, and Boots T5 airside will be moved to make way for an extended security area at the south end of T5. Not heard anything about a security extension, but it is needed!!

I wonder if BA will go ahead and restart the flights to Tripoli on the 1st May?

I posted a thread 5 days ago about Afriqiyah who may return back here to LGW around May after our government and the Libyan government have agreed to a resumption of air services from 1st May 2012.

If BA restarted it from LHR, do you think they will struggle with the route after all what has gone on in Libya the past year or so?

Yes. They will. A BA Press Release dated 23 January started:

"British Airways plans to resume flights to Tripoli from Tuesday May 1, 2012.

"The return of services between Heathrow and Tripoli follows a thorough security review in conjunction with the UK Government and the Libyan authorities."

Later the Release announces it will be a three-times-weekly service.
