JAL Announces New Boeing 787 Routes

Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:56 am

Today, JAL officially announced more B-787-8 destinations.

From the end of March, JAL will deploy the B-787-8 on the HND-PEK route daily. The NRT-DEL route will operate 4x weekly with the B-787-8 and the NRT-DME route will operate 3x weekly with the B-787-8.

*From April 22, 2012, JAL will launch NRT-BOS 4x weekly with the B-787-8 and will increase frequency on the route to a daily service starting on July 1, 2012.

From September 2012, both the HND-SIN and NRT-SIN routes will operate daily with the B-787-8.

From October 28, 2012, NRT-SIN will increase to 2x daily with the B-787-8 and HND-SIN will continue to operate daily with the B-787-8.

*Previously announced by JAL last year.

how many B787 are they going to get in the next 9 months??

It seems like they need a lot of planes to do all of that schedule.

Surely they have had discussions with Boeing on the 787 deliveries.
While NH is extremely vague the future of 787 routes, JAL seems extremely confident that Boeing will deliver on time.

Seems that they have a good balance between short-haul and long-haul usage of the new aircrafts.

Hopefully JAL will receive their first B-787-8 by the end of February.

JAL is also confident that it will indeed launch the NRT-BOS route on April 22, 2012 with the B-787-8:

I might have the wrong end of the stick but I thought the whole idea of a 787 was to do long thin routes. I was expecting Tokyo-Londrina or Tokyo-Dar es Salaam.

JAL seem to have them on routes that a 777 could do. What is the advantage of a 787 on a route the 777 could do?
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

NRT-BOS is a thin long-haul route.

It will increase the profitability of certain routes. The B-787-8s will not only lower JAL's operating costs on certain routes. It will also maximize LFs on certain existing routes operated with the B-777-200ERs, i.e. NRT-DEL, NRT-DME, etc.

Just a guess but perhaps, right-sizing capacity due to global factors and competition and using a more fuel efficient plane to cut costs.

A 777 will be able to fly most of the routes that 787 can fly, they have (or will eventually have) about the same range. Long thin routes means routes longer than what the A330/767 are capable of, but where there is not enough traffic to justify using a larger jet such as a 777,A340,A380 etc.

Don't think there's room for 4 carriers SEA-NRT.

Why no Hong Kong?

I need to try this plane soon. I waited too long to fly the A380, but was able to do that one 4 times last year!

I believe that no Asian carrier currently serves BOS (at least I did not see one during the 10 trips I made there last year but it could have just been timing). Anyway, is this a new city pair for JAL and if so, will they inaguarate it with the 787 or will/has it commenced and switch to the new hardware when available?
...are we there yet?

Good to see that JAL is adding back JL711, the evening NRT-SIN departure. This is going to substantial improve (or, should I say, restore) the competitive position of AA/JL in the USA-SIN market, where they were severely lacking without a westbound connection.

Correct. No American carrier serves Asia from Boston nonstop either.

Quoting flylku (Reply 16):

Yes.

Quoting flylku (Reply 16):
will [JAL] inaguarate it with the 787

As it stands now, yes.

What is the schedule for any airline right now? ANA still has a few coming to them before any other airline gets them, but with only four actually delivered, it would be a while.

It looks like JL is quite conservative looking at the plan. No new routes aside from BOS and by using it on DME and DEL , it is a sign that the role of 787 for now is used as primary (Tokyo) to secondary cities in order to enhance the profitability of these routes. To be fair, I suspect if there has been no 787, at least one of these will be going after a few years.

The use on SIN is quite interesting - I wonder why they decide to let SIN go all 787. What is it about SIN which favours 787?
