ANA Announces Cabin Layout For 788 Domestic

Wed Jan 18, 2012 8:39 am

ANA has announced the configuration of its upcoming 787-881s in domestic configuration.
Unsurprisingly, economy cabin will be 3-3-3 abreast plus 2 rows of 2-2-2 Premium class (First-class) for total seating for 335 passengers.
First scheduled flying is planned for April.
Will be interesting if the first two or so 788s will be modified into this configuration.

Link below in Japanese (with seat configuration - English site doesn't have it)

What will happen to JA801A and JA802A? Are they destined to fly regional routes? (They have 2-4-2 seating in Economy.)

I think ANA will replace the Econ Seats between Door 1 and 2 with Business Seats and placed them in regional routes like HKG, PEK

ANA is expected to operate at least three configurations of 787s. Domestic, regional and long haul. They will have massively different capacities from under 200 on the long haul to over 300 on the domestic. It's quite impressive that one plane will have such flexibility.

We'll see if they end up matching the spread on the 777-300s. The domestic 777-300 seats 516    while the 777-300ER seats 223. If the ratio between the densities of the 787 configurations is the same, then the long-haul 787 configuration will only seat 145 people.

They'd need a 787-10X to get close.

NH have said they will deploy 787-9s as replacements for domestic 777-200s and they will have the same north of 400 seats.

I have mixed feelings about the 3-3-3 versus 2-4-2. On one hand the middle row in the 3-3-3 is better than the 2-4-2 because you only have the one middle seat. On the other hand the 3-3-3 is bad because you now have 50% more middle seats (which are the worst seats) than the 2-4-2.

I think 2-4-2 with the double center arm rest is far better than 3-3-3 for comfort with the wider seats. However, most airlines will end up going for 3-3-3 for economic reasons. I think ANA might be one of the few airlines operating both configurations.

I would doubt it; I'd expect these aircraft to be put on regional flights and newly delivered acft from KPAE would be in the domestic configuration.

2-4-2 is obviously preferable, because the 3-3-3 has one more seat abreast; still, these aircraft will be used for domestic flights of no more than 2h30, so I don't think they will be that uncomfortable. On the other hand, the 2-4-2 on the 787 must be very comfortable indeed, the aircraft having a wider fuselage than the standard A330/340 fuselage.

Incidentally, can anyone recall what config the 788 to be operated on long haul intercontinental will have (i.e. the one to be used for the FRA flight); will this acft have a Premium Economy product?

I was looking at seatguru.com and I think it listed the ANA 787 has having an 18.5 inch wide seat but unfortunately only a 31" pitch. Imagine how much more comfortable the flight would be if ANA took out a row or two and added an extra couple inches of leg room. 18.5" seat and 33" pitch would be great. Especially on a very long flight.

I believe they will introduce a premium economy product as I don't think the 787s will get a first class cabin and ANA wants to stay 3 cabin on their long haul flights.

Four lavatories for 335 pax, good thing the flights won't be so long.

Will the domestic B788s carry around a lot of wasted long-range weight or will they be with smaller fuel tanks and lighter structures aka the B783 that never materialised?
Come, fly the prevailing winds with me

Probably no different than the domestic 772s they operate. It will be just a paper certification at a lower gross weight for lower landing fees.
