Air Greenland (Finally!) Opens Nuuk-Iqaluit Route

Wed Jan 18, 2012 6:50 pm

From the News section of the GL website: http://www.airgreenland.com/nyhedsvisning/?newsid=1030

Fair use snippets:

Quote:
Air Greenland is planning to open a seasonal route between Nuuk and Iqaluit for 11 weeks, from June 18th till September 3rd, with bi-weekly flights Monday and Friday. In time, Air Greenland is considering prolonging the season, providing that there is sufficient demand.
Quote:
The flights between Nuuk and Iqaluit will be carried out with a DASH-8 seating 34 passengers. Flying time is 1 hour and 45 minutes and the price of a one-way ticket Nuuk-Iqaluit will be approx. DKK 4.300. (USD 742, EUR 578)

Exciting to finally see this route start up since 7F dropped it in 2003. As the post mentions, the route is aimed at the oil and minerals industries, but I'm waiting for an intrepid A.netter (myself included!) to use it as part of a unique TATL trip...

'nuff said.
Public service announcement: "It's" = "it is". To indicate posession, write "its." Looks wrong, but it's correct grammar

Quite understandable. Not that I like to pay high fares, but consider that the alternative is flying all the way to Denmark, then to any US hub, then to Montreal and finally to Iqaluit. Not the cheapest alternative either.
Next flight: IAH-DBX-MRU-ANT

That's good news. A fair small airline with not too much airplanes opening a new route.

Hope I can fly that route one day

Would a flight from Greenland to Newfoundland and Labrador work better?

Nah, it isn't really that bad. Take Air Iceland Nuuk - Reykjavik, then the bus Reykjavik - Keflavik (30 minutes), then Icelandair to Halifax or Toronto, or more than half a dozen US destinations. That will save you a day in the air, also because you don't go non-stop Nuuk - Denmark. You will have to first go to Kangerlussuaq to catch the inverse chicken pox A330 to CPH.

But sure the Nuuk - Iqaluit route will improve Greenland's capital city connection, not only to Iqaluit, but all North America.

Iqaluit is served pretty well from several Canadian airports.

This is true. Travellers could connect in Iqaluit conveniently to Ottawa or Montreal, and then connect on to elsewhere in Canada or the United States.

Does Iqaluit already have CBSA clearance? I suppose they would get some international stopovers sometimes, but did they even have any scheduled international flights before this?

If you lived in Canada's far north (and presumably Greenland) where virtually everything has to be flown in or shipped (during the very short season when ports are ice-free) you wouldn't think that's a high price.

Its 500 miles from GOH to YFB and easily covered by a Dash 8. Connections are available in Iqaluit south on First Air and Canadian North………there’s also strong Aboriginal ties across the north.

The province of Newfoundland and Labrador stretches a long ways north to south but for example from GOH to YQX (Gander) it’s nearly 1100 miles. (Gander is actually further south than London UK)

Very exciting news indeed! That would make for a very interesting TATL crossing via GOH and RKV
