Blue 747 In MEL-Avalon, Any Input?

Thu Jan 19, 2012 5:00 am

Hi, i just came back from my x-mas trip to Oz and on the way from MEL to the Surfcoast I noticed again (while passing by on the freeway) a light-blue-metallic painted 747 with a red tail (no Kangaroo) standing outside the (maintainance)-hangar at Melbourne-Avalon Airport. I have noticed it everytime i passed by there in the last 3 years. Does anyone has an idea what it is??? Training for Engineering? Any info appreciated.

That is the famous Nalanji Dreaming! She was decommissioned a couple of years back and she has been sitting in Avalon Airport ever since she was taken out of active service.

Ah, thanks a lot. I can't remember the blue Nalanji Dreaming, she looked beautiful though on the pic. What is she used for now??

A couple of years... More like 6

Anyway, there are all types of speculation about it. People are saying it will be scrapped, others are saying it will be an undercover wreck for divers to explore. Honestly, who knows. Its been sitting there for so long, may as well become the Avalon mascot.

I last saw that old bird EBU when I was at the Avalon Airshow back in 2009...would have thought it would have been scraped by now...

Whats the state of it like? think the last time I saw it the doors were either open or removed...has it been torn down for parts any further or is it still in mostly in one piece (frame wise...)?
