This 744 was leased to Atlas and has now been returned to UA.

Is that the final livery?

Yes the 1-year Atlas lease is up as they have acquired other equipment and N194UA will operate on AMC and other charter flying over the next year back at United.

Well it looks like they were trying to do the repaint on the cheap here.

So I assume either 1) they are looking for other lessees or 2) the aircraft is due for a heavy check before long and they intend to park it? That's not what you do for an airplane that you ever expect back in your mainline fleet.

A ramper at IAH told me that N194UA had been reconfigured to all-J/F seating, with no Y, for its service to Africa. Is that true? Or has she remained in her original UA config?

That would affect the sort of charters she could be good for, and how easily she could return to the mainline fleet.

Yes, they did the minimum -- they pained navy blue over the Atlas globe and white over the name. The result is generic-looking. Increasing that sense is "CHARTER" in the new titling, making it seem like it's a new division of the company or something. Only the winglets, with their Atlas-gold horizontal stripe, not so different from UA's gold shade, seem proper.

Is N194UA a plane UA will want to keep? Flying charters, or mainline?

Airfleets.net indicates she first flew in June 1996.

It was doing AMC charters while with Atlas so I would guess it stayed in the old UA configuration. You would think with the "charter" paint scheme it will do charters only and maybe a rare mainline substitution, but hard to find any info on this aircraft. I've been watching acars and looks like it is still sitting in SFO.

...but saves a nice chunk of cash on repainting the whole thing right away.

Plus depending on who the customer is and where the destination is, it could very well be preferable to have something more nondescript (as nondescript as a 747 can be) than a fully liveried plane.

No stayed in the old UAL FCY config. Never touched the Sonair Angola flying, just did AMC and other commercial charters with at Atlas.

-400 days are numbered at UA. As I recall another one or two tails get parked this year.

194 I understand will stick around for about 1-year on AMC flying which starts in the spring IIRC.

I would guess they haven't gone the full mile because they still have about 150 PMUA aircraft waiting to receive the new livery. They've got a pretty ambitious timeline for having the entire fleet painted. Why should something which is parked most of the time and used as a charter some of the time take up a slot in the paint shop for the better part a week, if not more? Not to mention it may be out the door or in the desert by this time next year.

Sure, it looks half assed, but that paint job probably took two guys and a scissor lift less than a day. I suppose they did what PMCO has done to change the Continental tiles to say UNITED. Yes, it looks like crap, but for the job they've apparently tasked it with, it's sensible. It says UNITED and is relatively close to the same paint scheme, sans the globe, obviously. I say it's good enough.

At least they didn't use stickers...

UA 744s from now on are wfu due to age, not due to lease exprirements. They have a number of 1989/1990-built examples which are approaching final retirement. In very few years we´ll be discussing this about UAs aging 777 fleet.

I received an emailed from a friend who said this "on the wide body side we are bringing back 8194 (747-400) back from lease and they must have plans for EWR as they will be running a 747/400 intro class for the mechanics..UA NEVER has a class for no reason so there will be -400 ops there."

This will just make some of you ask more questions.
