Spanish media is reporting Lima is also on the rocks, but it's still bookable as of now.

Necessary evils. AF, like AA, has to restructure and routes like CUN and MCO just won't cut it. What a mess.

Wonder if we'll see BOS and DTW go to DL.

So is AF in major trouble? I know they are with KLM (who actually are doing pretty well), but what is the future for Air France?

Wasn't this always supposed to be seasonal, ending on 30th, as per this press release http://airfrance.com/FI/en/common/gu...estinations/destination_cancun.htm ? Or have they now fully axed it? Or was that media release just edited by AF?

Bad news! AF CDG-LIM 5x weekly just began last year as complement of KL AMS-LIM 7x weekly.

It's fully axed; not returning next winter according to the reports.

The first thing you do in times of re-structuring to stem losses is to cut new / recently launched routes.... any new route is a cash drain on a company until it is well established in operation (usually at least 6 months, and up to 3 years).

Therefore, if you need to cut losses, cutting recently launched routes simply makes sense.

I dont think this is exactly the big deal or "death of Air France" that some are making it out to be....

It´s quite logical to axe that ones....

Bit tourist destinations with the lowest yields in the network, using a B773ER in CIO config that can be use to other more popular destinations or reconfigure to be used in other more profitable markets...

According to Airlineroute, AF will resume this service by late Oct:

Paris CDG – Cancun
Seasonal service operates until 29APR12, then suspended for Summer season (Service resumes from 28OCT12)
From 25MAR12 to 29APR12, 3 weekly service operates with 2-class Boeing 747-400

AF director for Mexico said yesterday that given the uncertain economic environment in Europe and low demand next summer, cost cutting measures will be implemented; consequently, based on a thorough analysis, the airline opted to drop (suspend) CUN flight.

Yes, as GDS still show it bookable. But according to Spanish media, it's discontinued. So conflicting reports -I'd give it a few days. If it's still in GDS next week, then Spanish media is probably miscommunicating the Information.

CUN and MCO are two routes that are easily covered by DL if passengers want to remain with SkyTeam. I wouldn't expect visa issues for the majority of pax on these flights.

Otherwise, there's no shortage of discount flights between Europe and these two destinations.

So with Cancun, AF has now cancelled EWR and MCO. At this rate we will need to start a new thread guessing what they are going to axe next!
Not good times there.

Not only EWR, MCO and CUN but they're also scrapping SEA, AUH, LEJ and Asturias. As well as Chicago going seasonal. OK the US destination have DL and the ATI so they're not really dropping them merely changing them to a better suited aircraft - 763 but they are downsizing a bit.

Cancun please, it is no sign of the times or weather bell. This is a pretty much tertiary (low rev holiday) route that just didn't work out. Oh well. Nothing to be sad here, defeat is a part of life.

It is highly likely that AF will suspend services into LIM either during April or May in order to boost KLM's yields on the AMS-LIM route. Also, according to the Peruvian media, UX will increase frequency on the MAD-LIM route from 5x weekly to daily starting in April.

Well, who wants to fly on 77W with 10 seats abreast in Y, as is offered on these flights. I don't! I am shunning such airlines including KL and EK.

- Not me for sure! My Skyteam Gold is pretty useless to me as I try and avoid 777's, AF & KL seem to fly these to every place I want to go.

SEA isn't in the same bag as the others because it's part of the JV.

to bad to see them go, the 777-300er looked wonderful in Cancun, i guess the demand is not enought and they can send the Passengers with AMX, via MEX.

I think it's fairly obvious why dropping MCO and CUN makes sense, neither station would be particularly high yield.

I think you hit the bulls-eye here, it only makes sense to route these passengers via DL instead. This allows them to operate the TATL flights from the cities (primarily ATL in the case of MCO and CUN) with higher yield passengers.

It always puzzled me why AF is running the DTW flight and not DL, given the massive size of DL operations at DTW and the fact that AF was a new player at DTW. That route is often packed, by experience, so a DL 333 or 332 could do just fine instead. But I've been taking advantage of it a lot and I won't complain about AF running it instead of DL (much better on-board product overall, seats, IFE, food).
BOS is, however, old and big for AF, and I see it less likely to switch to DL. Yes ORD and PHL did switch, but these 2 have never been good performers for AF. But these days, nothing would surprise me...
When I doubt... go running!

ORD going seasonal. That really puzzles me a lot! How do they plan to attract biz traffic if they cant offer a year round daily service to one of the biggest US-cities. ORD is not MCO - but I understand it is not a DL-hub neither. I think such a move would be quite unthinkable for the likes of LH or BA.

VS operate it seasonally and it does very well for them in that routine. Always full and often operated up to a 346.

I find it difficult to compare VS to LH / AF /BA in this case. VS probably / mostly attract leisure and VFR traffic on their ORD route. They are not in an alliance, they dont operate a hub with feeder flights for the longhauls. AF is the european keystone of skyteam, has lots of feeder traffic to CDG and PAris is for sure a bigger city than FRA with more O&D traffic. That they can't fill a plane to ORD (not even an 330) all year round is a sign of weakness in premium traffic to me and a disappointment to me.

Even though I do agree with you to some extent, it isn't entirely accurate to say that AF dropped ORD, as DL (it's JV partner) has been assuring the flights to CDG during the winter.

And, on the other end of your claim, the truth is that ORD is a hub for both AA (BA's partner) and for UA (LH's partner). If one thinks about ATL, where both BA and LH have weaker ops, it's probably not that unconceivable for either LH or BA to drop it or give it to their own JV partners (if they had lower costs) in a scenario similar to the one AF is facing.
