Us Airways Possible Midwest Expansion

Sun Jan 22, 2012 7:23 pm

With the announcement of Omaha, Des Moines,

Do you think that us airways could expand to Tulsa or Oklahoma city

I fly to XNA every 3 weeks and then I drive to Tulsa becuse it is so expensive to fly to Tulsa. (delta is 545 rt) (US is 254 rt)

When I fly to XNA it is always full. But it is crazy that they don't fly to OKC,TUL. Obviously the route would be flown to CLT. PHL just doesn't make a whole lot of sense just because distance

Ex. Say your flying from TUL-MCO. it doesn't make any sense to go to PHL then MCO..CLT location makes the most logic

You could argue PHX but I think the route is suturated with WN direct flight from TUL and OKC

Just my 2 cents

US used to served OKC from PHX in the mid-2000's, but was axed, likely because of WN's presence on the route. I would think the most likely candidates for restart is 1st, OKC, then TUL, with PHX and CLT. OKC just has more volume these days, but I agree, that it's sort of crazy that US does not serve either of these two mid-sized cities, especially with LIT and XNA are served. A lot of people would say that they need to start PHX first, but I might argue that they gain some ground with a CLT route from OKC first and get their name in the Oklahoma community, before trying to attack WN.

BTW, Oklahoma is considered part of the "South" by the US Census Bureau, and is sometimes considered part of the "Southwest", but we are not part of the Midwest.

I would love to see US in TUL so I could use my US miles. But TUL is a WN city, and historically speaking US doesn't do well in a city when WN is there competing with them so I'm not optimistic.

BTW, Oklahoma is in the SOUTHWEST, not the midwest.

OKC, TUL, and GRR are really the biggest holes domestically speaking from US' hub in CLT. I agree with others that you will see OKC before TUL though.

I have to disagree withu. Look WN in PHL. us airways defended its turf. Also there doing just fine in PHX.

WN is getting really expensive. I think they are. I know we're not in the early 2000s but it is ridiculous when I look at WN routes and prices and delta is more cheaper or us airways is more cheaper

Yeah, those are US mega hubs though, it's different when you have a midsized city like OKC or TUL where WN has had a large presence already. It's not a WN hub however, and that is the difference. Though I don't think it's just US, all airlines sort of fear WN in small to medium market cities, as that is WN's bread and butter.

No, I didn't mean they were, but they are a hard force to be reckoned with in these types of markets. I believe WN was the reason they pulled the PHX flight a few years back in the first place.

There is one easy way for US to expand their Midwest Expansion.

Draw a line down the center of the lower 48. It goes straight through OK, maybe slightly east depending on how you "see" the US.

It's in the South, and it's west of the Mississippi, but it's not Southwest, not to us in the real Southwest anyways

I would hardly classify PHX as an untouchable "megahub". US does extremely well going to Mexico, Hawaii, and some major cities in the East (JFK, ORD, and obviously the PHL and CLT hubs), but everywhere else faces pretty stiff competition from WN. ATL (DL,FL), DFW(AA), MSP, and DTW (DL) also have good competition.

Draw a Horizontal line through the middle of the United States, it goes above Oklahoma. US census defines it as part of the south, most Oklahomans call it the Southwest. It is NOT part of the Midwest. Midwest is Kansas north to the Great Lakes region.

It is US's hub, no doubt, and US has "owned that area" so to speak, for a very long time, since they own America West. They have deep seated routes at that airport, as does AA at DFW, UA at ORD, DL at ATL, etc. The hubs provide feed for WN's network, whereas small to medium cities require people actually heading to the respective cities, not transiting as well.

No different when people say Detroit is in the Midwest - nothing Mid or West about Detroit, if you divided lower 48 in 4 quarters it would be in the northeast if anything

Okay, so here's my trade offer. US to Tul in exchange for WN. Just to be generous, I'll throw in G4

In all seriousness, it is odd that US serves XNA but not TUL or OKC.

I wondered with the DL/US slot swap if US would fly GRR-DCA (like DL did) and maybe add CLT in there too, to make the station more viable. Not that GRR is hurting for airlines, but it would be neat to have US come back!

They might have flown to OKC from PHX at one time but there is no way it was up until 2009. Actually that was the year they finally cancelled ICT from PHX.

PHX-OKC ceased operation in September 2008.

US also had flight to LAS as well did alright until WN started it as well. However, G4 stepped out first before US finally gave in. WN is just extremely dominate in OKC even with higher fares than others. They have an extremely loyal following and employ somewhere around 800 people in the city.

Depend on what happens with the potential takeover of AA will drive on what they do in the Midwest (and yes I agree, we aren't in the midwest down here LOL). I think later this year and 2013 will probably be interesting times for US when it comes to filling in the gaps.

Delta still has 1 CRJ a day ( 5 days a week) to DCA.

Frontier has 1 A319 a day (I believe 4 or 5 days a week) to DCA.

Lansing (LAN) also has a Sun Country B738 a few times a week to DCA, and they're only an hour drive from here.
